Title: Wireless signal fluctuations 25% up and down randomly

I have DIR-655 router and my Desktop has DWA-552 xtreemN Desktop adaptor, winxp 64
I have current drivers and firmware installed on both router and adaptor
I have been having problems with connective signal drop by 25% or more for no valid reason.
The 25% number I am getting from the router DIR-655-> Status ->Wireless, this status report shows various clients connected... Signal strength varies on my desktop from 50% to 75% and Mbps stays 108Mbps.
I checked the router statistic, they show the odd packet drop.
Any suggestions on the cause of signal fluctuations?  ???

all i can think is:

1. your neighbors have wifi as well, and you are probably on the same channel

2. the dir-655 is a 2.4 ghz and your microwave, house phone uses that 2.4ghz channel (well depending on your house phone.)

oh and remember that wireless mouse and keyboard uses the 2.4 ghz frequency.

my advice is probably to manually set your wifi channel, find a spot in which does not use that channel. In my area, everyone is using channel 1, when i changed my channel to ch 5. my wifi actually increased. I thought that it wasnt going to do anything, but it actually did. If not then get new antennas? but thats the last resort.

the picture i have posted, thats what i did, 7dBi+ each antenna, giving me a extra signal boost.

slapping antennae on hoping for a signal bost will usually produce few if any positive effects.

Channels 1,6,11 are the only ones (in NA) that don't overlap, stick to those unless your environment is really weird.

see that is true, putting antennas will only give you a small increase.


wait i dont get about 1,6,11? can you explain that more please? cause in my neighborhood a lot of people are in those channels, and i assume that that will just cause more interference. Im in ch 5. so i should stick with channel 1,6, or 11 even though a lot of neighbors are using that channel?

Thanks to everyone for the help... the response was amazing.

I downloaded inSSIDer and scanned for all the networks in my area and reviewed all the channels being used by others I found channel 10 not being used. I changed my network to channel 10 and got the best response for stability and least fluctuation in the signal.
