Hi. I have been following the forum for awhile now and I just thought I'd give my opinions about things as an average D-link user.
The good:
D-link actually has a forum where users can vent, share thoughts and give suggestions. This seems to be fairly uncommon these days, so props for that.
The people coding the firmware and such are actually interacting with the users.
The 1.21EU firmware is stable so far. The only time I really ever have any problems is if I bombard it with torrents. (Too many connections for it to handle I think. I have the 10 concurrent connections limit in XP disabled by a tool.)
The bad:
D-link apphears to be too focused on squeazing money out of their costumers some times. If you spend $150 on a router it should have bridge mode visible. (DIR-655 has bridge mode, and after support E-mails about it I was taught the CSS-hack to take it back).
"It is not needed and cause problems" Really only translate into "We'd rather you spend another $100 on one of our purebreed AP's".. But how does that comply with the "Green" Profile of D-Link? Yet another machine that draws power... Not very environmental friendly. And come on.. Other router vendors who built routers based on the same hardware still has the option, so can you! :)
The USERS of the current NA firmware is doing something bad too, by complaining that they can not downgrade when it clearly states in the change log that there has been a new SDK put in place so there are memory remappings in the hardware. And how on earth is it D-link's fault that you are too lazy to read? 10% of the posts on this forum wouldn't exist if you could just read.
The 1.30EU firmware came without release notes. How are customers to know what will happen to their firmware if there is no changelog included. Therefore I will wait to upgrade until there is some info about the release. In fact, it doesn't even state if it comes with secure spot or without it.
Ok.. In short:
D-link:
Thank you for having a forum
Thanks to devs for interacting with the users
Thanks for a stable 1.21EU firmware
Quit hiding bridge mode on the Dir-655
please provide documentation for the 1.30EU firmware
Users:
READ the release notes before you upgrade!
Thank you for reading. I hope my input as an average user has been helpful :)
