Hi all,
I am considering purchasing a 323 NAS after reading different reviews on the product.
I just wanted to get some feed back from different posters regarding what HHD's they use. Also, if you could mention how long you have been using your unit with the specified hdd's, that would be great!
Ideally I'm looking for two 1.5 TB HDD's. Problems I've heard about a few HDD's with this unit are below - perhaps the community can debunk any of these?
1. Do the Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB drives still suffer from firmware issues, or has that been solved?
2. Do the WD Cavier Green 1.5TB drives still have the problem where they shut down and the 323 is constantly waking them up, shortening their life expectancy?
3. Do the WD Cavier Black 1 TB drives run too hot for this unit to be on 24/7?
Thanks!

I use the WD Green 1TB drives in mine and they spin down after 5 minutes of no use and the NAS goes idle. Haven't had any problems yet, I would like to think the 1.5TB drives would act the same way.

How long have you been using these drives in your 323?

tda-danny,
See Western Digital Green 1.5TB WD15EADS compatible with DNS-323? (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5603) and Problem with Pink/Purple drive lights on DNS323 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=6226) for my comments on the above 1.5Tb drives. (I went with Seagate.)
Also, I stayed away from the WD's Black due to fear of (al beit, rumored) hardware-embedded DRM... Not avoid to DRM mind you... seriously. But, for two other reasons:
- First, that's just one more completely unnecessary circuit to heat up, slow down or, worse even, cr@p out my drive; and
- Second, because I don't like stupid bastards stepping all over my legitimate rights to backup my stuff. Seriously, I'm not into torrents, or warez, or any other shady stuff. But still, I don't want any possibility of some unnecessary hardware algorithm hosing my files... E.g., My LEGAL .ISO files from MS TechNet Plus/Direct.
Some may say I'm smokin' rabbit tobacco... :'( But, I can assure you hardware-based DRM is already here.

I've been using 2 seagate 1.5 TB drives with no issues at all since February. Using the 323 exclusively as a music server....

I have a DNS-323 with a pair of Seagate 1.5Tb drives, and a DNS-321 with a pair of Samsung 1.5Tb drives, both have worked just fine with those drives.
Seagate seems to have worked out the firmware problems a few months back, both of mine came with the updated firmware, and I got them about 4 months ago from Newegg.

Thanks all. I decided to go with the Seagate 1.5TB drives. Got it up and running last night. Outside my minor bitTorrent problem (now fixed), http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7703.0, it seems to work fine.
