Has anyone been able to figure out a way to have the DNS-323 appear as a source under your AppleTV?

I'm using an add-on to my Apple TV called NitoTV that lets me mount SMB shares, but its not an ideal solution, so I'm looking for a way to make the connection without it.

I thought the iTunes server part of the DNS-323 would be useful here, but maybe not?

I installed Boxee on the ATV and can play stuff over the network, drop it local on the ATV, access my Hulu RSS feed and play shows from there, etc, etc. Boxee plays all file formats too. Worth the effort. All you need is a thumb drive at least 256MB in size. Took me 30 minutes to complete the install.

Yeah, I know about Boxee.  I've installed it too, then turned it off.  I found it kinda slow and clunky.  Plus not as easy to navigate as the Apple FrontRow stuff that the Apple TV runs.

I'd really like to just be able to access my music and video library directly on the NAS from Apple TV without Boxee or NitoTV.

Wow I have had nothing but a great time using ATV/Boxee and streaming from my dns 323.
Not at all slow.

If you don't like boxee then you might like to try out XBMC, for Music and videos the skins on it are great for the experience.

Thanks, I'm not a fan of XBMC either.  Again, its kinda clunky and slow.  It looks like it doesn't belong on the AppleTV, to me.

I have been looking at Sapphire recently, which is very slick -- connects to IMDB for DVD info, cover art, etc -- but it doesn't currently play DVD's directly.  i.e. you can't open a DVD that is in a VIDEO_TS folder as of the current version.

Hi all,

A newbie here, mac-only user (other than my new-ish DNS-323).

Like Stillerz, I want to be able to stream my audio and video over my network to my Macs and Apple TV. I have quite a lot of recorded video all in iTunes-appropriate format, but too much for the Apple TV HDD. I have played with the USB enabling, XMBC and Boxee. They are OK, but not really as slick as the Front Row interface and, in any event, I can't get them to work since I upgraded to Apple TV 3.0.

Is there a way to serve video from my DNS-323? I see audio (everywhere other than my Apple TV), but none of the video file. I have seen stuff here, and elsewhere, on firefly, but frankly I don't understand all the install code and stuff.

I could server all this off my desktop, but that requires me to be logged in and have iTunes running, and this is a pain.

I get the impression that others are looking for similar solutions, but I am not sure whether they have found one.
