Please, please allow me to play my songs on my .ps3 (or any DLNA device) in the correct track order. This is a huge problem and limitation of the dns-323. I am considering returning mine (I bought it last week) because of this.
This is a well documented problem in various online forums. Doesn't anybody test this stuff?
All my mp3's are numbered "01-<track name>.mp3" and the dns-323 somehow cuts out the "01-" and displays only the track name which would be great if it played in the correct order and not alphabetically.
I beg you, please fix this....it's ridiculous.

AFAIK, most media playback/serving technologies nowadays use the file metadata when indexing.
You can confirm this by taking 5 (or so) of your .MP3 files and cleaning up the metadata (tag) information. You can use TagScanner (Google "tagscanner xdlab") to view/edit the tag data. Once you have cleaned up the files, place them in a sub-folder within the UPnP shared folder and see what you get on the PS3.

I agree with torontodude. This is definitely a problem with the DNS-323. I have tried various ways of renaming the files and it still sorts them alphabetically. I have no idea how and why the file names have their numbers stripped off the front of the name when ordering. I have also downloaded this tagscanner and my files are all properly named tagged, including the track sequence. All my MP3s are ripped from CDs I purchased and I was using CDex to assign ID3 tags and rip them. From what I can tell, CDex does a great job assigning the ID3 tags. Has anyone else found a way to name their files so that they are ordered correctly?

I have to say that i tag and name all my files alphabetically. Why would you do anything different.
Using a proprietary format where everything is 01 - barking mad; 01 - out of my tree; 01 - sony is great; . . . with no further clues is well . . . barmy.
On an even more positive note, have you tried using playlists - that is m3u files? I use 'tag and rename' to set up files as:- artist - album - track number - title. Then it quickly creates playlists. They work for every music system i have. But then i don't do apple or sony or 01 - cranky filenames.proprietary.com.

Most of my MP3s are ripped from CDs. If the songs are ordered alphabetically, the album order is not respected. When I listen to my CDs, I would like them to play in order.

Using MP3BookHelper, I was able to get my files sorted correctly. Although the file name has the track number as a prefix, the ID tag only has the name of the song. By prefixing the song titles in the ID tags with the track number, the files are now sorted correctly.
I believe the dns-323 does not use the track number in the ID tags for sorting.
PS: I am not sure which version of the ID tags need to be updated, so I did them all.

It may work, but it is far from an ideal solution. I like to have my files tagged neatly and would rather not have to do this.
Is anyone from DLink out there who can verify if this is being investigated?

I agree with you mcsteve but until they fix this issue, if ever, this is the only workaround I can think of. I also installed firmware 1.08 with the hopes that dlink fixed the problem but no luck. At least with MP3BookHelper you can easily go from tracks with numbers to without numbers if dlink ever does fix this problem.

I think I'm understanding your posts ... just in case though.
If you examine the metadata of one of your MP3's, the following tag metadata is properly filled in:
Track
Title
Artist
Album
Year
Genre
Album Artist *
Grouping *
In order for the songs to be sorted by track (as they should be), you have had to prefix the Title data with the Track data.
If so, it would interesting to know if the problem is an incompatibility between implemented standards on the PS3 (XBOX360) UPnP Client or the DNS-323 UPnP AV Server.

After some further testing...
I installed xbmc (upnp client) on my laptop and used it to access my media. I can still see and play the files, but there is still no ID3 info being shared, so I guess it is safe to assume that the DNS323 is at fault here. Albums play in alphabetical order in this software too.
I've already tested using a different client and the same problem persists. I am pretty sure it is the DNS323 at fault here. (I'm using a PS3 by the way)

Hilaireg, yes the title data needs to have the track number prefixed to the song title. Like mcsteve, I am using a PS3; however, I downloaded an application from iTunes which reads Upnp AV servers and it also does not order the tracks unless I prefix the title data with the track number. I am not sure if a six dollar application can be considered a Upnp client but it behaves just like my PS3.

Reads very much like a deficiency on the DNS side; since you appear to have done the most research on this issue, it would be worth posting a request in the BETA forum section with a link to this thread.

The UPnP AV media server simply serves the files to the device makes the files available to the device to read.
The UPnP AV media server does not provide the functionality of many other media servers created just to be a media server with many options and transcoding and require the use of a PC such as TVersity and a pretty decent PC at that. The DNS-323 is designed to be NAS and provides some added features like UPnP AV media server, iTunes server, FTP, and more.

The ID3 tag information should not be being stripped from the files. It looks to me that the other media server programs are reading the ID3 information and doing the organization to the PS3 OR Xbox. What happens if you put the same albums on a USB drive and connect it to the PS3 or Xbox does it display by ID3 tag information?

I have just tried this and the full id3 info is being shown (along with embedded album art) when I copy the same mp3 files to a usb key and browse on my ps3.
I was able to replicate the issue using XBMC Media Center software to view the upnp shared files on my xp laptop. Again, the only information being shared from the DNS323 to XBMC is track title. There is a free version of XBMC Media Center available so perhaps you could use it to test.

Any update on this? If you are saying that all id3 data should be sent, then it looks like a bug somewhere.

I'd love to hear an update on this as well.. it's a really annoying issue that sort of makes the DNS-323 worthless to me... I bought it to store my media, mostly.... I mean, I can still obviously use it to back up files etc... but the reason I chose the DNS-323 was the UPNP server included, etc... and having tracks play in alphabetical order is ... well, not desirable ;-)

Even just a nod to say that this is being investigated would be nice. I would love to see this fixed before the next firmware is released.

I investigated this a little further and it turns out files shared on the UPnP AV media server are shared by files name so the ID3 tag information is not relevant while viewing your files.

That isn't quite true. It actually orders tracks by their ID3 track name. I take it there are no plans to change this then? :(
The other downside to this is that us PS3 users are limited to browsing by folders for music and not seeing full UPnP functionality.

That is true I just confirmed this and requested that it look at the track number in the ID3 tag info instead for audio type files if possible in the next firmware release or 1.09.

I had a look at the UPnP/AV standards and sure enough, implementation is at the discretion of the implementer.
IMHO, the lack of implementation should on the player side as opposed to the server side. It would most certainly be appreciated if D-Link could allocate resource dollars to implement a comprehensive set of UPnP features if at all possible.

Ideally all id3 tags will be shared, but as a bare minimum track name and number would be a great improvement.
