Is it possible to modify the firmware to allow external drives to be plugged in the back of the device? I don't see why it's so difficult to add this feature, especially modifying a linux os. This is the only major downside to this device.

Actually it's not - if you google you can find ways to do it quite safely - and I agree with you, adding support for a "removable external USB drive and a backup routine to allow backup of the internal disks" would greatly enhance the useability of the unit.

Fordem,
I did google this before I posted and found out about fonz' funplug, but unless I'm using an older version of the firmware, I can't use it in order to attach another external usb drive to the back of the 323. I'm using the beta 1.08 right now, but I don't see why Dlink can't modify the os within 323 to support external drives. It would absolutely great if they could get this out.. This was the major draw back when I was deciding whether or not to buy this device and ended up originally purchasing the Linksys 2 bay device, with 2 usb and network on the back, but unfortunately, that device was horribly flawed due to overheating issues, took it back and ended up purchasing this and decided to live with the network access instead. Hopefully, they will add this feature soon.

I'm not certain I understand you there - are you saying fun_plug doesn't work with the new firmware versions? If I recall correctly I've used fun_plug upto 1.07 with no difficulty - I haven't tried it with the 1.08 beta, but I would expect to have no trouble with it.
To be honest - I'm don't use the popular ffp (fonz fun_plug), I built my own, and yes, it supports a drive on the USB port - fun_plug is a script that the DNS-323 looks for at startup, if it exists, it will be run, and whatever commands are in it will be executed, so it's essentially a matter of loading the USB storage module and then mounting the drive.

darkmantis post your questions about ffp on the "other" forum,
you will be pleasantly surprised that using ffp, USB drives with D-Link's fw v1.08(beta) does work.

Well - mig beat me to it - but this morning I re-installed my fun_plug and it does work on 1.08 beta

So, let me get this correct, you copy the funplug file into the main root "volume_1" and restart the device and it should install everything, correct? I tried that on earlier versions and it just sat there. I read the wiki page on it and thought I followed the directions, but after many failed attempts, I just gave up.

post your questions about ffp on the "other" forum
and you will be able to get your DNS-323 running ffp

If many users use "fun-plug", D-Link should add one (at least) in the next firmware
