I would like to create private folders for each of my family members. No one can view/write on the folders except themselves. Which permissions do I need? Thanks

Hi there - Did you get any reply to your question? I have exactly the same problem and still couldn't figure out how to fiddle with the users and groups under DNS-323 to achieve that level of compatimentalization. Unfortunately, the documentation on this issue is quite vague.

Hope this helps:
Create your users on the DNS: eg.
Admin
User1
User2
User3
User4
Create your users folders plus a shared folder:
Volume_1\User1
\User2
\User3
\User4
\Shared
Create your Network Access List:
Share Path User/Group Comment
Admin Volume_1 Admin Admin Full Right to all Folders
User1 Volume_1/User1 User1 User1 Private Folder
User2 Volume_1/User2 User2 User2 Private Folder
User3 Volume_1/User3 User3 User3 Private Folder
User4 Volume_1/User4 User4 User4 Private Folder
Shared Volume_1/Shared All All Users Shared Folder
* Make sure you give the users read/write access to there folders when setting up the network access list.
** You can have as many shared folders as you like but only one private folder for each user unless you use groups.

You might want to make a note that the current software does NOT allow password protected shares and anonymous shares to coexist. That was removed a couple of firmware versions back. All of the shares have to have accounts assigned if any of them have accounts assigned, anonymous is only for the entire NAS.

I am still running version 1.04 and am waiting for version 1.08 release, I am not aware that this functionality had been removed and if it is still removed in version 1.08 than I guess I won't be upgrading firmware again.
I don't see how dlink can remove functionality that they advertise that this unit can provide, I would have thought that dlink would be expanding the ability of groups and user as it is not great in version 1.04. I don't use the groups and users to a great extent as most of my shares are open to all but I do have some shares that are restricted to a single group and a single user.
Please confirm that this is now not possible with newer firmware version.

I've already confirmed it, I have a thread here somewhere complaining about that very issue. I was pretty unhappy they removed the capability to mix the shares and now insist on all passworded if it's not just an "open" box.
Try it yourself with the new firmware if you don't believe me. ;)

This is great, I had a problem with my DNS sometime a go and contacted dlink for some help, the first thing they suggested was to upgrade to the latest firmware (1.07), if I had done this I would have lost my shares in some way either completely open or my open shares locked down, this would have caused my more problems than the reason that I called them.
Good work dlink :( :( :(
