I would like to know if there any special setups required for ip telephone traffic, I am presently trying Joip on a global phone. My internet provider is megawire and it is wireless as i live in the country. my main problem is that i can hear people clearly but they cannot hear me only a few blips and squeaks.
thanks

What kind of UL speeds does your ISP provide you with? And when you're on the phone, is that the only network traffic you have going on at the time?
-
my speeds as measure by speed test is about 400 down and 40 to 50 up when on the phone the line is dedicated

Do you know what codec you are using?
G.711 - 64 Kbps, sample-based Also known as alaw/ulaw
G.722 - 48/56/64 Kbps ADPCM 7Khz audio bandwidth
G.722.1 - 24/32 Kbps 7Khz audio bandwidth (based on Polycom's SIREN codec)
G.722.1C - 32 Kbps, a Polycom extension, 14Khz audio bandwidth
G.722.2 - 6.6Kbps to 23.85Kbps. Also known as AMR-WB. CELP 7Khz audio bandwidth
G.723.1 - 5.3/6.3 Kbps, 30ms frame size
G.726 - 16/24/32/40 Kbps
G.728 - 16 Kbps
G.729 - 8 Kbps, 10ms frame size
If you're using G.711 or G.722 then you may see why you're having broken outgoing audio.
Ask your SIP provider if they can set your outbound to G.726, or one that uses less bandwidth.

thanks a bunch i will look into that with my provider, I have noticed however that when i use the internet voip testing software it reports back that sip is blocked. I live in a rural area and use a wireless provider is it normal for the provider to block sip?

I would think only if your provider also provided phone service via VoIP.

my internet has been down for about a week so nothing has been done over christmas, but now back on the ball i have a Email into my provider on the codec issue, also on the sip blocked issue i will keep you informed.

Did you say 40 to 50 up? Is that a DSL?
What provider?
Can you tell me where your ATA is located (ie: in front of or behind the router)
Some ATA's have QoS built in and for it to work need to be placed in front of the router. With your lack of upload specs, if the QoS is built in to the ATA and set up properly it should work.
The issue is that I do noy know if 50 to 50 up is enough.
If you have not already done so, put your ATA behind the dir525
router lan port ----->> ATA wan port
Make sure the QoS engine on the 625 is active

Internet based telephony involves activating acquisition which does not depend on geographic location. Issues in voip circumscribed up with its accretion use and problems started developing in the accessories and technology used. Voip problems accept back been broadly discussed and debated by professionals and industries alike. VOIPSA is one such initiative. Voip problems in calls to 911 had brought in authoritative issues.IP PBX (http://www.inin.com/ProductSolutions/Pages/Enterprise-IP-Telephony.aspx)

Installed 3.08 firmware and VOIP works fine. All settings default. VOIP did not work on 3.06 firmware for me.

I realize this is an old thread, but just wanted to add my solution for folks searching the subject of "VoIP Issues"...
On my DIR-625 Rev. A, I used to use my Palm TX as a "softphone" and a program called "Articulation". Could not get a proper connection to any VoIP providers UNTIL I unchecked the "SIP" option in the ALG Configuration page
Advanced Tab/Firewall Settings/Application Level Gateway (ALG) Configuration
Worth a shot to anyone with the same router and a VoIP problem.
