Title: no internet connection detected
Post by: levelhead on September 18, 2009, 05:52:17 AM
I am trying to configure my new DIR-655. My ISP is Time Warner Cable with an Arris Touchstone modem (I think it's model TM502G). During my first configuration attempt, the router was unable to detect an internet connection (see picture). I clicked "Next" and continued to configure my network. My laptop detected and connected to the wireless signal from the DIR-655 but I was unable to access the internet. After reading several posts in the forum, I unsuccessfully tried to fix the problem by typing in the router's IP address and copying the MAC address. I then restored the router to its factory defaults and tried to configure it from scratch a second time. Again I received the same message shown in the picture even if I clicked on "I don't know" when asked for my ISP type.

Could someone point me in the right direction? Is it an issue with my cable modem or Time Warner?

Thanks!

Make sure you power off the cable modem and pull the battery out. Unplug the power from the 655.  Put the battery back in the cable modem and then pug power back in, wait for it to boot all the way up (all lights on) then plug in the 655 and wait for it to boot all the way up.  This is all you should have to do, if it still doesn't work post back.

You may have to put in the MAC address of your computer into the router.

Hi,

Have to ask, but does the internet work if you go directly thru the modem to a pc ?

You MUST get that basic set up to work before you insert a router into the mix.

Make sure you leave any mac address stuff blank - if you still want to restrict stuff by mac then do it after you have your network running,

davevt31: I just checked the modem and there is no battery in it.

mhouser, tentimes: I tried both leaving MAC blank and copying it from laptop to no avail.

Sammydad1: Yes - the internet works if I connect my modem directly to my laptop via ethernet.

Another thing to mention - I have my desktop hooked up to the modem's USB port (the router is hooked up via ethernet).

I'm stumped...

You can only use one of the connections from the modem not both.  Disconnect the USB and use the ethernet to the router's WAN port. Tehn hook the computer by ethernet to a LAN port.
