Hello All,
Just want to get everyones opinion/feedback if there are any positive changes with the latest firmware release 132NA? From reading all of the previous posts it seems like there are several issues with the Shareport, and having to reboot the device in order to restore the Shareport functionality. Now in my case I would occasionally use the Shareport but not on a everyday basis. So that being said, is it worth to upgrade to the 132NA firmware build? I'm currently having to reset my router every two, three days in order to restore connectivity(Running FW version 1.21 H/V: A4). So just want to hear everyones feedback on which is the most stable firmware released for the DIR-655. Thanks!!!

My experience with 1.32NA is very positive: fast, Shareport working 100% on several clients and no other issues in useage. I don't have any of the issues described by some on the board.
I do fear my experience will be labelled by upset users who do have issues... >:(
I did have serious issues with Shareport in 1.2x / software version 1.14. And the performance with 1.2x was not that good. I have revision A2.

I was having issues with Shareport not connecting to my printer after flashing to 1.32NA. I've since re-flashed 1.32NA on my 655 and completely redone my setup from scratch. It's been two weeks and so far Shareport is still working. I've never noticed any of the other problems with lockups or disconnects that other users have mentioned. I've always used static IPs though and have DHCP, Advanced DNS and DNS relay disabled. Turning those settings off seems to be the suggested cure for those problems. Keep in mind that once you go to 1.31 or 1.32 you can't go back to 1.2x or earlier. If you weren't having any problems I'd say don't do it. Did your 655 come with 1.21? If you flashed to 1.21 you may want to consider re-flashing it. If you do re-flash, reset to defaults before you flash, don't flash over a wireless connection, and manually enter your config instead of importing it from a saved file. I think that will give you the best chance for a stable setup. Once you get it all configured then save a new config file just in case you ever have to reset it.

I was occasionally having to power cycle my router just to get it in a working state with the firmware version 1.21. So I decided to upgrade it to firmware 1.32NA since I saw a post from Lycan stating that they have not been able to reproduce the issue in their lab, and a few other positive review once upgrading to newer firmware.
Now that I'm on FW 132NA I'm having to power cycle the router about twice a day just to get back online. After the power cycle (I have DNS relay disabled) I have to manually release/renew my IP address since it’s not showing the ISPs DNS servers. keep in mind all of my client machine have the latest NIC drivers installed. My setup is a basic lan with wireless nothing too sophisticated just a regular setup. I don’t use shareport would like to use in the future. When I flashed my router I was hard wired into the router disabled my AV just in case there is any kind of scanning that can slow the process down or corrupt the upload. I reconfigure all of the settings from scratch not sure what else I can try differently to correct this issue. Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Torrents are much slower with 1.32NA then they were with previous firmwares.
Router locked up more often with 1.32NA.
-
1.32 is running smooth for me if I turn off everything and just use it as an access point off of my other router. As a router I had a ton of issues.
-
Anyone using schedules that cross over midnight or have start times from 12:00 to 12:59 with 1.32.
It doesn't work with 1.21 obviating the entire reason I selected and purchased this router.
-
Update:
I just re download the bin file for the 1.32NA and reflashed it. I left all of the default settings except DNS Relay (disabled it) and enabled wireless and a guest zone. We'll see how long will it last with out having to power cycle. I would hate to disable some of the features that were part of the reason why I purchased it.
No schedules for me I previously was logging the sites visited but not any more trying to keep things simple here dont want to over whelme the device ;D its having difficulty as is with the default settings out of the box. Would Dlink have any kind of tool that captures a memory dump of the router at the time that it crashes? not sure how they would capture logs or details on the crashes and why the router decide to reboot out of no where. Also maybe run some wireshark traces to see the network activity at the time of the issue.

I just upgraded my DIR-655 A3 to 1.32NA last week. I wish I had done a web search and looked on this forum first. I would have left it alone. I had very few issues before the upgrade. Since upgrading to 1.32NA, web access is noticeably slower and I have to reboot the router every couple of days because I loose wired and wireless connection, even to the management interface. With this release being almost four months old, you would think they would have a new release available by now.
-
I have a similar situation to macworth, I'm literally only running the router as a wireless ap and a gigabit switch because as a router it just couldn't handle it, perhaps 4 computers doing basic web browsing and 1 pc doing occasional torrenting was too much to ask.
Reflashing 1.32NA didn't fix any problems I had previously and I never backup/restore settings as I know them all, it had many issues with SharePort as it would not stay connected for more than half an hour at a time.
However after flashing the new beta, stability returned that I haven't seen in a long time, I can only assume it was able to flash properly this time because the firmware was not meant to do anything like that, SharePort is now working correctly and it is rock solid, I still don't use the router for anything more, but the wireless part has improved.
-
I had no problems at all with 1.21. It was set it and forget it.
Since upgrading to 1.32NA, I have to power cycle the router every 1 - 7 days. When I lose connectivity, I can't do anything else to regain it. Tried ipconfig /release and /renew, disabling/enabling the NIC, rebooting the computer... nothing works. I can't even access the router's interface to reboot it. So, the only thing I can do is power cycle it. Then I get my connection back right away.
After reading other threads here, I've done a factory reset and re-flashed 1.32NA and then reconfigured the router manually. Now I wait...

Hello:
1.32NA. SO FAR SO GOOD FOR ME!
I upgraded my DIR-655 today from 1.21 to 1.32NA. I did this upgrade because I was not able to load my DirecTV apps feature from my DirectTV receiver. I read that 1.32NA fixed a UPnP bug--so thinking this may fix my DirecTV apps issue, I tried the firmware upgrade to 1.32NA.
I saved all my router settings before I upgraded and then once I installed 1.32NA and rebooted I reloaded all my saved settings ( mainly because I didn't want to reconfigure all the SSID/Passwords on all my wireless devices). (to save settings BEFORE you upgrade and then reload after wards...go to Tools, Systems, Systems Settings) The whole upgrade took me about 10mins. Everything is normal and operational. I have many devices connected to my wireless network...Everything is running perfectly 2 hours into the upgrade. I am even able to administrate my router from my iMAC using Firefox.
Update 1/30/2010...Now on to 1.33NA ( I must be crazy after reading all the issues in this blog)
Still no problems with 1.32NA. However, today I upgraded to latest release, 1.33NA. As before I was able to reload all my saved router settings once I upgraded to 1.33NA. All normal and operational as I type. Still heavy wireless traffic in my home with several wireless devices in use constantly to include wireless Mac Time Capsule which frankly really slows down the network when backing up hourly. ( I fixed this problem by simply scheduling only one backup per day instead of hourly.)

Router locked up more often with 1.32NA.
After 1.32 went out for several days, I searched the forum and found many positive reviews. So I upgraded from 1.31.
Unfortunately, seems 1.32 firmware has issues with heavy traffic. Each time I downloaded sth with Torrents or eMule, the Router locked up, the connection is really slow, or I can't open other web pages. I have to manually reboot the router to make it working fine.
I waited several months for a new firmware but...
Now I went back to 1.31 and I found it works much better than 1.32.

Well... I just had to power cycle the router... it's only been 2 days since I tried reset to factory and re-flash.

Mine have been stable for 7 days 6 hours now after i downgrade from 1.32NA to 1.31NA.
DNS Relay is DISABLE..

Hi,
I am new to the forum and this is my first post.
Since I am finding this post so very helpful, I decided to register and give my take on the new firmware 1.32NA.
Since I newly bought this router (with hardware ver. A4), I was in the 30 day return period. I did not care about breaking the router functionality.
I connected it to my network, got it working and upgraded it in steps from 1.21 -> 1.31NA -> 1.32NA.
I have done this on Saturday night (Oct. 30) and today is Nov 4. It is still working fine.
As always, my first day with the router was slow. I think this is because the QoS is learning the usage pattern or something. But from second day onwards I am in good shape (touch wood). No serious problems.
I also needed to upgrade the Shareport s/w which supports the new firmware. I am happy there too.
I actually went ahead and but a 1 to many USB adapter and connected my HP all-in-one printer and my Sandisk 4GB stick inside and they both are recognized. I also (seperately) put in a Lexar 512MB stick which was formatted for FAT32 and even that was recognized fine.
My ONLY complaint is that my very old SMC G router had 1 antenna and this one has 3. STILL both of them were at par in terms of their signal strength downstairs. Therefore my PS3 cannot do Media server recognization properly. (Only 30% strength - on a good day!)
I am GREATLY interested if anyone can point me where I can find the WDS functionality in DIR-655 router so I can use my old SMC (it has this functionality) as a repeater for downstairs.
Thanks for reading such a long post.
Dax.

I am curious about your DirecTV situation as I am switching from Comcast in the next few days. I had hoped to run a CAT 5e or 6 to my HDTV frorm my DIR 655. Any suggestion? I have 1.21 and A4 now but intend to use Shareport as soon as I can install the software as we need to print from a laptop with a DWA-160 adapter. BTW, both my laptop and desktop are running XP SP3.

I have had enough with the DIR655 router!!!!!!!!, it is not a cheap router. It is a disgrace that there is lots of people complaining about issues with the latest firmware build and Dlink seams to do nothing about it.
It is so unreliable, The application gateway feature to help handle SIP across the NAT does not work, when switched on. Therefore it is hit and miss if you have your VoIP service working correctly. Tonight the port forwarding decided to stop working and can't tunnel in to our IP-PBX any more.
I will not recommend to our IP-PBX clients to use Dlink products in their networks. Also will not purchase Dlink products myself anymore. As I now have to go and purchase a replacement router. :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I would like to share with you all some more information of issues with the DIR655. As post in my last reply that my 655 was going to be replaced a.s.a.p. I replaced it with a wireless dual band N router that was 1/3 cheaper than the 655. I have noticed the following
1. The start up times after changing any programming is a lot faster, This also applies to bringing up administration and configuration pages.
2. The DIR is also loosing packets with 1.32NA firmware. As now, my VoIP connection is not choppy and SIP for the IP-PBX is working just as it should be.
3. The internet in displaying pages and interaction with the web in noticeably faster.
If Dlink are telling us that they don't have issues with the DIR655, then it is just bull. They should go and look at the competitor products to find out what we are all complaining about. :) :) :)

Congratulations, but your information really does not add anything to this thread. There's no issues here, SIP VOIP works like a charm. I haven't seen a Dlink quote saying there's nothing wrong...but for all i know you completely messed up the config thus causing issues.
For your information, I am also using Linksys networking products (routers) and I really do not notice the pro's you describe.
PS: do not call me a fanboy, I am only arguing that your personal experience is in no way a generic experience. If having working devices is enough to qualify as a fanboy there is really something wrong with your judgement. ;)
-
I have many years experience using Dlink routers and products. I am using the same configuration parameters on the new router and all works great. There is nothing extreme about my DIR655 otherwise I would be a happy camper and would not have wasted my money on a replacement.
We are experiencing the same issues at a number of client sites and they are in the works for replacement.
-
After wanting the DIR-655 for so long, I received a free Dlink DIR-655 from a relative of mine who had FIOS installed.
Worked great for some things, not so great for others.
Like the other poster said, VOIP does not work well. That was the biggest issue, but there were others.
I packed away the router and instead bought a cheap $35 router that was DD-WRT capable.
Now I have no problems whatsoever. The DIR-655 was the first router I've ever had trouble with.
The DLink fanboys (aside from those that aren't posting good things because they work for DLink) need to recognize that there are indeed firmware issues. Saying otherwise is just dishonest.
Companies will ignore you until you hit them on their bottom line especially when it comes to something like firmware.
Give it a thumbs down and advise people to go the DD-WRT route which is much cheaper as well.
-
Nobody is denying a user with an issue. The cause of those those issues, that is exactly what is scrutinized each and every time. 'Bad firmware' is an easy target since nobody, esp. the tech n00bs even bother to provide evidence or test results that exclude other possible causes. That's what people may call short sighted.
-
I had ZERO problems with 1.21 until I upgraded to 1.32NA. The router now locks up every 2 days so I have to power cycle it everytime it does that.
-
After running my A2 DIR-655 for over a year without issue, a few months ago it started acting up. About once a week I would have to resort to power cycling because I couldn't browse the internet on my wired desktop PC. I am on 1.32NA firmware and it started behaving badly ever since the upgrade from a previous version. Nothing else has changed in my networking environment.
All morning I have been perusing through this forum to see other users' experiences, and now sadly have come to the revelation that like many other users, I am disappointed with my router and D-link support. I think it would be safe to assume that of all the forum-goers here, the majority are having issues and need help - hence the need for such a forum. It would also be safe to assume that if your hardware is working fine, then you don't really have a need for help and aren't posting your experience.
I will be downgrading to 1.31 tonight to try and fix my problems. I have no faith in the 1.32beta release.
-
Not Eddie Z. but this is mine since the day I installed the beta09 firmware:
-
Nothing special about my setup. No Virtual Servers or Port Forwarding. Not using shareport but I do use the USB port to power a laptop cooling fan that the router sits on. 1 wired PC, 3 wireless PCs and a Wii.
-
I think having the router vertical helps heat dissipation.
-
Impressive. Mine rebooted 3 days after beta 09. Would love to know what you did besides default settings. I have to have a couple of ports forwarded, etc. so I'm not 100% default -- but nothing fancy.
In addition to NTP and DNS forwarding, I'm also beginning to suspect an interaction between the router and my Intel GigE NIC. The router seems ok until I turn that particular machine on. Everything works fine for a while, but soon it starts disconnecting just that PC first. Eventually it just goes belly up and disconnects everyone and then I'm dead until a physical reset. Maybe it can't handle the throughput... who knows.

As far as I know, you are the first person that was able to migrate a config file from an earlier version. From archived threads on this forum, I didn't think it was even possible.
As for 1.32NA, the jury is out and I probably should have stayed on 1.21 given how stable it was for me. Since the upgrade (4 days), I've had one mysterious reboot and the loss of WPA2 connectivity (had not go in an re-input the key which solved the problem). I don't use a lot of the complicated features, so I'm hoping it calms down.

I have a single cat5 running to a 4port netgear hub, splitting one connection to an Xbox, PS3, and Directv. Has been working great, even before I got my DIR-655. We stream Netflix on the Xbox and PS3 (Xbox has it built into the UI and you dont need the BluRay disc in the drive). I get HD video on everything thats advertised as HD. I'm using Comcast for my internet.
With the hub, Win 7 and my DLINK DIR-655 can see the gaming systems and Directv. I did try to swap the hub with a faster router (using DHCP), and my network quality slowed down considerably. And Win 7 could no longer view past the hub.
My Ubuntu box cant see past the hub without some work :) But I never tried it with the XP machine.

I bought my dir-655 in november and in the beginning it was ok but once I added some access control rules and reserved ips it keeps locking up....only 2 computers (wireless) work out of 5 (1 wireless and 2 wired).
I am thinking I should try downgrading to 1.31 and see how that works.
Any advice?

Hello Labuvr: I couldn't get DirecTV apps to work until I upgraded DIR-655 firmware to 1.32NA. I have a wired connection from HUB to two DirecTV receivers ( wireless is not possible with my receiver) . DirecTV apps BTW in my opinion are so spectacular. They are slow to load and other than adding another "cool" factor I really don't use them much. Perhaps as more useful DirecTV apps are offered this will change.

I used 1.32NA for awhile with no issues until I started to play an online game. I would freeze for up to 10 seconds then be able to move again. This would happen frequently on my wireless connection. When I ran a cable to the computer everything was fine. I tried upgrading to 1.33 and that made everything worse on my wireless connection. Web pages would load extremely slow and still had lag in the games I was playing. I am running windows 7 64 bit with a Hawking wireless adapter HWDN1.
I tried multiple configurations withing the routing and nothing would fix the wireless issues I was having. I ended up downgrading my firmware to 1.21 and everything seems to be working now. DLINK really needs to test their firmware more before releasing a subpar upgrade or just come up with a better test plan.

How did you downgrade from 1.32na to 1.21? According to D-Link that is not possible, assuming you didn't just buy another router.
