I cannot create folders. When I attempt this I get a device error 1117. I can see the folder structure but a few are missing files and sub-folders. This device is used for general file and backup storage.

What OS are you using. What Firmware is your DNS-321 running...need as much info as possible before any troubleshooting can take place.

Sorry about that, I guess I was not hopeful of a reply because I've seen several unanswered posts here. So, thanks for your willingness to help.
I'm running Vista HP SP1 on 5 computers all of which get the same error. On one machine I occasionally run Ubuntu 4.5 from a pendrive and still get the same problem. Firmware Version: 1.02 Date: 04/08/2009. The hard drive is a 1GB Seagate ST31000340AS in the first slot. The device is connected to a Zoom ADSL X6 wireless router. The DNS unit has a static IP. I have reset the unit to original settings once and the directory structure returned briefly but there were no files listed. The status page lists the correct space used of 230MB but there is no volume listed when the server is accessed in File Explorer.

After rebooting your DNS if you open explorer and type in \\IPADDRESS_OF_UNIT\Volume_1, what errors do you get. Replace IPADDRESS with the IP of your DNS-321.
WHen receiving I/O error are you accessing the unit from a mapped drive or network map or by the above mentioned method?
Is it possible that its an issue with your modem/router? Have you tried direct connecting the DNS-321 to one of your VISTA pc's and testing file transfers to see if you still receive the I/O error?

If I try to access it through the IP as below I get: The network name cannot be found. (67) As for trying it directly to the computer, no but I haven't touched my router since I set it up. Still, I'll give it a whirl.
O.K. the laptop gives the same error as before (67). In fact, in Explorer the Volume is not displayed.

Is your computer IP statically set as well when connecting directly to the NAS?

I set the LAN address manually and verified the subnet. When doing a network refresh the DNS-321 name shows up but when clicked nothing but the printer icon and web folder appear, not the root directory.
Update: I did a factory reset on the unit again but this time I turned it off over night and now all is restored! I had done this before but to no avail. Does turning the unit completely off and letting it set make a difference? I'm really concerned about using this device now because I have 16 years worth of pictures from Africa on it, not to mention all our wedding photos. I did not think of this before but are the drives accessible from Linux? I occasionally boot my desktop into Linux (I'm teaching myself that OS for something to do in my spare time).

The unit is based on linux partitioning so either using FS Drivers utility or a linux machine you should be able to access the data on the drives. Also you really should consider making hard backups of such valuable information and storing it in something like a fireproof safe. What happens if your unit is stolen or a fire breaks out etc. Glad to hear your unit is back up and working, you may want to copy your data off for now onto your machine and verify that the hard drive is not having problems.

I have a DNS-321. It worked fine until I had DSlL connection problems. To make a long story short, I ended up repairing out my phone line and replaced my modem. But now I cannot get my DNS-321 to mount on my Network. I have an Acer running Windows XP Home.
When I use the D-Link Easy Search Utility the DNS-321 is listed. I click on it and it assigns it an IP, Netmask and Gateway address. However, then I hit apply, the default password admin pops up, I leave password blank but I keep getting the message "Wrong administrator password input!"
What am I doing wrong here? Can anyone suggest what is the problem?

This incident is unrelated from the original poster. What you are experiencing is the fact that your PC and your NAS are on two different subnets. Try setting your computers IP address statically in the same network as your DNS-321 IP range listed in the search utility.

My apologies for the mis-post. Can I not change the IP address of the DNS? How do I change the computers IP address?

O.K. this is NOT solved as I originally thought. I was following your suggestion about backing up some of my more critical files to permanent media and moving some to my desktop when the process stopped with an error 57. Now I cannot see any files and cannot create any folders on the drive.
Update: After a complete reboot of the server and desktop I have access to the files again. Still, there is something not right because this should not be happening.
Update 2: Out of curosity I booted into Ubuntu 9.04 and accessed the drive and tried to copy a folder to a folder on the Vista partition D:. The processed again stopped about 10 seconds into the copy procedure and locked. I closed the File Manager and opened it up again and tried to access Volume_1 and once again there was nothing there. I could not create folders either. My next attempt will be to access the drive with Ubuntu as a removable drive as opposed to a network drive. If i can access the drive and move contents over to the main desktop drive then I think we can safely say there is an issue with the DNS-321.

UPDATE: After some tweaking around I disabled the UPnP AV server function and have had days of no trouble as listed above. Only now I am having trouble playing movies from the device.
