Hi people,
I'm looking forward in buying a DNS-323, but I just needed to know how noisy it is in background...I mean noticable?
It has to be set up in the living room since that's the only place that my router can be and I don't want to invest in a bridge. So you can understand, I don't wan't to constantly hear the fan or HDD (probably a WD Caviar Green) while watching a movie or if my woman is reading a book, well...Likely we'd want it to be barely noticable.
So just how noisy is it?
Thanks, appreciate it. 8)

It is just that, barely noticeable when the drives aren't spinning. When they are it depends on them. The fan is somewhat noisy but I've found it isn't used often.

So, the fan isn't alway's running? That's good to know! ;D
Thanks
Still wondering if my wife will kill me if I buy one haha...But again, it's said a WD Caviar green is pretty silent...Anyone have tested it?

I got two of those (500 GB model) in 2008. Not sure if they have evolved since, but they're on the quiet side of hard drives. Not incredibly silent though.

My DNS-323 is quite silent, even with the fan running. The most noise is the drives accessing data. OTOH, my DNS-321 is VERY noisy, they must have cut costs on the fan! :(

Hmm...Good info, thanks all.
It's too bad the DNS-323 doesn't have an integrated wi-fi adaptor, then I could set it up somewhere else that would be less disturbing...The only way I figure this would be possible would be with a bridge, but that's extra 140$+.

Just put it on the floor behind something near where you sit, that will muffle any sound. As others have said, it's a pretty quiet unit. Mine sit across my office, and my computer fan is noisier than the NAS.

You really don't want to use wireless for serious data transfer, UTP cable is only 0.25" diameter.

My roommate has a DNS-323 with two Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives (rev. 7200.7 I think). It is very noisy. Sounds like a hair trimmer is running in the other room or something. However, I have a DNS-323 with two 1TB WD Caviar Blacks and it is very quiet. The drives are slightly louded than the fan during read/write but otherwise the unit is very very quiet and well balanced.
