Title: Lost my Internet connection this morning. Any ideas what to do?
Post by: Dbert on October 08, 2009, 08:01:22 AM
This morning I could not get connected to Internet.

I rebooted everything, but still no connection so I called my ISP.

He looked up my account and told me it was fine. He could connect to the cable modem and everything. He told me he could tell that I had a ethernet cable missing (disconnected).

So I bypassed the router (dir-655) and plugged my pc straight to the cable modem. Powered off everything, and brought it back up. Still no internet.

Powered off everything, plugged in the second PC with a different cable, straight to the modem and brought it back up.. Still no connection.

Now the tech support wanted me to get a cable guy out to look at my connection, of course I didn't have time for that, work and everything.

So I plugged everything back as it was before it stopped working, still no connection.

But however I have access to my router (192.168.0.1) I can see the WLAN address, I release and renew. still no connection.

I have the old cable modem in a box there so just to make sure I hooked it up and tested
PC - Router - Cable Modem  , No connection
PC - Cable Modem , No connection

So my question is, what's my next step?
Is it the Router my problem?
Is my cable modem my problem?
Is it the connection Router - Cable modem that's the problem?
The internet setting in my windows vista (it was working fine last night)
My Networkcard, I tried 2 different computers
Cables? I tried 4 different cables, same result.

When I get back home my plan of action are to install new Firmware, do a factory reset , and pray.
If that don't work I'm clueless and I guess I have to call the cable guy.

Any suggestions?

If you computer won't connect to the internet without the router (and you are connecting the computer correctly), then I am not sure why you would think the router would be at fault.

So you are saying that when you connect the router, you get an IP address, but no internet works.  In that case, it sounds to me like there is some auth problem going on.  What provider do you have?  Maybe they instituted some kind of MAC address security or something.

The only reason I think the Router might be at fault, is that I had a linksys router before this one, and it "froze". Until I did a factory reset and a complete re-install it was acting like this. That time my ISP, Charter, had to do some reset at their end too before it started working. Over the phone we re-configured almost every device I had, even if we didn't change any settings we reset, so i really don't know what was the problem, but I am suspecting the ISP.

I'm kinda thinking it's the same issue this time but I would like to make sure the "idiot" is not on my side. Networking/ISP issues is not my strong side.

Well, my girlfriend had Charter out in western MA, and I am pretty sure they used MAC address auth.  I remember at one time their router died, and her friends computer worked directly connected to the router, but not her computer.  It turns out that they had used her friends computer MAC address and used their clone function on their router.  It might be something like this but I don't know.
