Title: Capping Traffic from the network ?
Post by: Skettalee on October 11, 2009, 05:06:16 PM
I have a network with 5 computers on it and I noticed that when my friends kids are on the network that it goes so slow where no video will stream or nothing will barely download. I can barely read my google reader when they are on. I really dont want to not let them on but I notice that they are using programs like uTorrent to download tons of files (probably illegal stuff). The only option I can find through my control panel is how to just not let their MAC address or IP Address not get on the network. What I am looking for is a way to slow down their connection so they can still use the network but not stream download tons of files so where they are using over 600 kb/s downloading so I dont even have access to using my internet.

How can I cap their connection so it goes much slower? Is there a way? Thanks!  ???

Would anyone know if this is at all possible?

You could probably use the following settings to get what you want:

ADVANCED, QOS ENGINE, 10 -- QOS ENGINE RULES

I'd try 2 rules, Adults and Kids, or something like that (you might only need one rule to bump Adults up or Kids down).  Protocol ANY for both.  "Local IP Range" set to the appropriate PCs.  Different "Priority" for Adults and Kids.

If you're using dynamic IP addresses for your PCs (the default), then you'll need to force either the Adults and/or Kids IP addresses to always be the same based on their MAC Address using the following:

SETUP, NETWORK SETTINGS, ADD DHCP RESERVATION

Another way of making sure your PC always uses the same IP is to assign a static IP address from within Windows.

Haven't messed with either router setting, but that's what I'd try....

Woah i think you lost me there.

Let me back up...

You could use the DIR-655's QOS ENGINE RULES to change the priority of network traffic based on a range of IP addresses.

It wouldn't "cap" the traffic like you want, but you might be able to set it up so your traffic always gets through first.

To get to the QOS ENGINE RULES go to the ADVANCED tab of the DIR-655's browser menu, then QOS ENGINE button on the left, 10 -- QOS ENGINE RULES is at the bottom of the page.

Take a look...

Am I making sense so far?

(I'd look at the QOS ENGINE settings page and verify that "Enable Traffic Shaping", "Enable Qos Engine", and "Automatic Classification" are all checked.  That alone might solve your problem.)

--------

(To anyone else reading this:  are the 10 QOS ENGINE RULES applied to network traffic in both directions, or only in the uplink direction?  Would this work regardless?)

Hi,

Sorry to point this out....but do remember that if your friends kids do anything...umm..."NAUGHTY"...your ISP will hold you liable as the account owner....

If they are using a torrent program...a good chance they are downloading copyrighted materials....

I would think that technically...you are not allowed to have a neighbor (outside of your "home") use your internet even with your consent.  At least that is how Comcast's terms are written...as far as I know.

It is nice of you to be willing to help out somebody who maybe doesn't have the cash just now....but make sure the kids don't hang you out to dry....they may not operate by the same morals as you do....

Thanks for the info, very familiar with that. The kids live with me, and its really the 9 year old and I already told him about the stuff. I have Time Warner. Not really worried about him downloading illegal stuff much more as I would be worried if he was sharing it to lots of people. But I am keeping an eye out, and thats one thing I wanted to do was just totally slow his connection down so he is a bit more discouraged when trying to do high speed downloading on bittorrent or other networks.

Im looking at this and still very confused on what I should be doing. How about these screenshots.

Here is the QOS settings right now :

And this is the list of the users on the computer:

My main computer is DamienLee-PC and the one that is killing the traffic is Eyern-2.

What should I be putting together or typing up so Eyern-2 isn't taking all the traffic or maybe he is downloading a max of maybe 100kbs a second or less or something that will keep his connection running but slower than the others?

Not sure if this is an option, but you could always block his access via "Access Control" so that he only gets access for a short while and NOT when you are trying to do something on your network.

I use media streaming as well, and when my daughter is online (her machine is G only), my entire network slows down to G... (N is no longer available).  When this happens, I just check her access control to stop her from what she's doing... then my N comes back up on my media streaming.

I cant totally remove the connection. I just need to be able to cap the connection to slow it down just to single MAC address' or IP's whatever I can do. I need to allow them to all atleast access the internet for either school, games or email and social networking. I just want to slow down and discourage the downloading of huge streaming things. And recently learned that he spends alot of time on www.twitlive.tv streaming that as well a hulu and bittorenting through revision 3. But i do notice utorrent and limewire use from time to time so I know there is something going on. I just want to cap connections to something under i dont know lets say 50kbps download during the times that I am on the computer.

Main thing, I do a live streaming show on the net www.337studios.tv as well as have a server with clients doing HD video editing and V FX work for motion graphics intros and need my uploads and downloads to go as fast as possible and i really notice a drop to sometimes almost total connection lose when the other computers are bogging the traffic. I had to buy business class to get faster connection but i still get the bog down.

So you guys say I cant cap certain computers on my network to get a slower connection speed than me?

Can you try the QOS Engine under the Advanced tab?

Enable everything
Name it "John Smith" or whatever the kids name is
Enter his IP address
Protocol ANY
Port Range - 1 - 65535
Priority - 255

I can't promise it will work, but it's just a thought.

You could also do the same thing to your computer with a Priority of 1

Just a quick reply. You do realize how torrents work right?  When you download you are also sharing at the same time. The sharing (upload) is generally what slows a connection down.  It also does not matter how much or how little is shared if they want to come after you.  However now the RIAA and MPAA have taken a new track and are just getting peoples internet account shut off rather than suing them (that was a losing battle for everyone). Although there are still places who will litigate you into nothingness.  A very good way to fix your problem if it is indeed file sharing or P2P is to make sure it is NOT installed on any of the computers. that is the only real way to protect yourself.

the QoS will help with your connection speeds if they do it, just won't help the consequences. Remember, P2P like utorrent is two ways. both an Upload and a download are generally needed.  Also a very good way to become infected with all sorts of nasty computer stuff  if you are not paying attention.

Thanks for the info but yes I already know all this stuff. I used to do IT and i still do for you know family and friend types. I know all about that stuff and setting programs when somethings done downloading it doesn't share anymore, it quits, and also i dont know 100% about anything illegal anyone here is getting but alot of the stuff that slows it down is still legal stuff too. like streaming all kinda shows through the net, the webcast stuff and serving files. My end i am a media professional so I got big HD files coming and going so i need my bandwidth....

But yes thanks for posting that, everyone else should also read that too to be aware of it. I make sure everyones computer stays clean though, im always fixing things up and making everything run better for them. and I do uninstall limewire when i get chances. I let them keep utorrent because there are alot of legal bittorrent things that they do.

Im even getting the kids into IT stuff and watching revision 3 content and trying to teach them about all that stuff. shoudln't have cause now they are just all over the net using my TUBES!!! i wantz my TUBES back.. lol..

Dont know exactly if that helped but i did get a "I think the net is going slow today from one of them" :-D so guess things are working! except that i found out i was uploading something to a client this morning and while at work they called and said its corrupt (not complete) they went and unplugged the damn router and net trying to see if they can speed the net back up and that went ahead and screwed me from sending something to a client today :-( cant win for nothing huh?

Yea. kids will do that. I have Mine set in my room which is then locked.  With utorrent you are going to share as you download, does not matter if you turn it to not share after the download is done. It is still sharing and connecting to other clients. You may want to check in the

"Preferences - >bandwidth -> Maximum Upload rate"  Should be at the very top of the window for it.  If you set that to 0.. then you are giving it all the bandwidth it wants for the upload.  The best you can do is set it to 1.  However you are STILL sharing as you download the information. There is NO way around that. Well. I should not say that. You could block the connections that are outgoing for it.  You would notice if you had done that though since the indicator at the bottom of the software would be yellow or red and not green.

So you will still be sharing, no matter how you have it set up in utorrent.  Torrents are designed to work that way. You downland and upload at the same time, and there is a ratio used to determine the Download speed based on your upload speed. (There is a sweet spot. I find that inputting 20 works best for using torrent based transfers. Any more than that and the speed starts to drop off on the DL. any less and the same.)  Just something you might want to check.  But yes. P2P programs will kill your effective amount of bandwidth

Another thing you can do if you insist on letting the kids use a p2p program like utorrent is limit the Download Bandwidth. ALL of them have this option.  It will be right under the upload bandwidth I mentioned earlier.  Set that to a reasonable number that still lets you do what you want, and be done.   Now the problem is, your kids can change any of those settings as well whenever they feel like it.

Yep, aware of all this. I set it at 12 kb/s upload max for seeding but when things would be done they are deleted off of utorrent right away. Also, they aren't my kids. Maybe I should just let them jump on someone elses wireless thats not protected around here. LOl, just kidding. but anyway yeah i think its working to make sure i get the majority of the bandwidth. thank you guys for the help with this too. I really owe you! so let me know if anything is every needed to be designed :

but yet again thanks!
