Title: Wireless N speeds slow
Post by: JimMonz on October 16, 2009, 05:32:32 AM
Ok, I read the above sticky note about getting 300 Mps, you need D-Link all the way.

I think I should get a stable fast signal if I don't have all d-link. So, before I made any changes I noticed I was "connected" at 65 Mps (this is seen in Vista's Network Connections area), but average was about 30-35 Mps (this was seen using BitMeter while transferring files). Files are coming/going from laptop to desktop with GB LAN.

Now on to my equipment:

I have an Intel® WiFi Link 5100 Series in my Asus G51Vx-X2A, annd I went to the Intel website and updated to the latest driver.

On the DIR-655, by recommendation, I enabled WPA2 only, turned off any Wireless-G equipment (only one, another laptop).

Now I still get a connection at 65Mps, but I now see it jump to 78 and 130 Mps. I also get transfer speeds from 40 to 60 Mps (seen with BitMeter).

Here are my questions:

Is this normal for this type of configuration?

Has anyone changed any router settings to increase their speed?

I have used TCPOptimizer, from www.speedguide.net, to tweak the network adapters, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I would also be happy with a stable 130Mps (REALLY hapy with 300Mps).

Thanks for any help.

Are you using the 40hz channel width?

Its not guaranteed to increase throughput but it might help.

I get around 9MB/sec transfer from my Desktop upstairs to my router downstairs.

There are almost right above each other so signal strength is reported as 95%+.

Hi,

I have also seen the speed "auto-bump" as it is needed...but then it settles back down to the lower number....

If you start to download or transfer a big file that sustains a connection....it seems to sense that and the speed goes up on its own....  I can't verify this...only that it seems to do it on my setup....

Also with your router setups, set the wireless channel(s) to the lesser used ones in your environment...depending on neighbors and such....

Make sure you encryption cipher is set to AES....that DOES affect .11N speeds as opposed to TKIP...  WPA2 alone is not enough it seems....

OK, I saw the setting for AES or TKIP, I left that at auto.

I didn't verify signal strength, but I remember seeing it 95+%, PLus, the router and laptop are physically in the same room with about 6 feet between them, so I don't think that is a problem.

Channel width is Auto 20/40. Make it 40?

Thanks.

I lock mine at 40.  also, is there are a lot of wireless traffic in your area?

How do you lock at 40? Mine only says Auto 20/40?

Yes, there is alot of wireless access point in the neighborhood.

There are about 3-7, at any given time. I use inSSIDer(metageek.net) to find these. All in the 2.4 range, none in the 5Ghz range.

Maybe I should get a router that works in the 5GHz range? Hmm?

OK, I have to stop bashing the DIR-655 for speed, it was me.

My Intel Wireless 5100 adapter driver was set for "20 Only" for N communication, I set it to "Auto" and I am getting 300Mps connections when transfering files, woohoo!!

I get a normal connection around 150Mps, but as soon as I start using the connection, the speed ramps up.

It was weird that I had to go to Device Manager and manipulate the Properties of the adapter, to make it work properly. The adapter was factory set this way.

I also set to WPA-Personal, WPA2 Only and cipher to AES only. This seems to work fine.

Thanks for all your help.
