Title: Encrypting Files on the NAS Device

I understand encrypting the hard drives themselves is not possible nor practical for this type of device, however what about a method to encrypt the data on the drive itself.  I will be using the NAS to backup my computers with Acronis which includes encryption, so that's covered.  But when I store other files, let's say daily financial files for argument sake, is there a way to have those files automatically encrypted?  I believe the encryption application would need to be on each computer in the network.  Too bad I can't have it on the NAS and just pass a token key to enable data encryption.

What about an add-on application/appliance to the NAS?

I believe you're correct that the encryption engine would have to run on any computer writing data.  One issue with encryption on the NAS is the limited processor power available, it would probably put a big dent in network throughput to add it on the NAS.

I found my solution...  True Crypt does a nice job of everything for my needs.  I don't need to encrypt the entire drive since I do have financial information I'd like to back up to my NAS, this keeps it safe.

True that it does take some processing time away from the users computer but it's minor.

TrueCrypt is a good solution, and it has no impact on the NAS throughput. :)

That is because the NAS throughput is so slow   :)

But yes, it works like a champ and it's free.
