Title: Dead - Won't power up anymore
Post by: sclark58 on October 17, 2009, 10:23:20 AM
I've been using my DNS-321 for 3 or 4 months and yesterday it went dead.  I've:
1. Checked the power source - even changed it to a wall outlet.
2. The power brick has a green light illuminated.
3. Checked the plug at the rear of the unit.
4. Did a reset (pinhole)

Still dead!  Any other ideas?  -- thanks

Check the voltage from the P/S with a voltmeter, see if it's proper.

Just a few questions to help you out...

1) Was the unit running (on) before it went dead or were you trying to turn it on after you turned it off?
2) Was the unit moved and during the move it went dead? (Possible broken power connector on the box)
3) Do any of the lights, fan, anything happen when you press the power button?
4) Have you removed the drives and tried to power it on?
5) When/if you check the voltages out of the power supply, check for AC ripple as well and report those values.  If you have a failed power supply replacing just that item may not correct your problem.  The drive box could have caused the power supply failure.

My advice is to call D-Link and get a new unit.  Pull your drives and do the RMA.  If you have specific setup information that you recall, I'd recommend you write it down so when the next unit arrives you're able to get your NAS back online as soon as possible.

1) Yes the unit was running in a corner of my office connected to a UPS (+battery).  I was not attempting to power up/down the unit.
2) No
3) no lights or fan functioning
4) Yes
5) I'm not that technical (nor have the tools) when it come checking the power source.

Thanks all, I'll contact D-Link now - just wanted to cover all my bases first.

Sure sounds like it's dead.
