I recently upgraded my firmware to the 1.03, and the fan worked fine before this, but once i upgraded and changed the hard drive sleep timer to 10 mins, my fan stops working once the boot up process is done, someone help.

I noticed my fan turns off after the boot but it does come on periodically after I upgraded to 1.03 as well.
What kind of hard drive temps are you running?

i noticed that to, but my hard drives run around 100 something F, is there a way i can set it to constantly run??

My drives are running at 104F and 107F. The fan periodically turns on low speed and off. I need to find out what temperature is controlling the fan. Someone here may know that info. Is it the drive temps, a temp sensor in the box, both?
Is the NAS box in a cold room? Do you have the box cover installed? (Makes it retain heat more)
How about changing your drive timers to 30 minutes. See if that makes a change.

FWIW, I had to "modify" the case of my DNS-321 and DNS-323 for decent ventilation before they ran reasonably cool with two drives. They have a fan, but there is no path for incoming air flow in the stock case. I hogged out the bottom of the front panel on each of these to allow air to be sucked in and across the drives. It dropped the temperatures 5-6C on each of the units.

paintballer4lfe - You might be the first to complain about the fan *not* running :P Be thankful that it's quiet.
gunrunnerjohn - Agreed, the case has very poor thermals. I don't understand who at Dlink designed a system with a fan but virtually no intake vents. The teeny tiny pinholes in the nook just above the LEDs can't support the volume of airflow that the fans desperately try to pull, and they're too easily clogged by pet hairs & dust.

Mine has a much better venting system now. ;D

Here is what is listed for fan speeds at temperatures in the previous release notes and has not changed in 1.03. 43 degree celsius: 43(OFF), 46(LOW,4050rpm), 49(HIGH,6390rpm).

Where are these temps measured at?

Good question Joe. My drives both report 29C, however the box reports 44C. What's the reason for the wide disparity?

My unit says the box is at 45C and the drives are at 35C, taken when the box is at idle. That accounts for mine being quiet, both temps fall under the "off" variable when they aren't being accessed. The temps are also taken in a room that is a consistent 22C in the summertime and around 20C in the winter. It is also taken with the stock front cover, no mods, and the cover is fully closed at all times.
As for where the temps are taken, that is a good question. I would have placed a sensor at the exhaust port for the box temp for my preference. But I'm guessing that the 321 has it on the circuit board and the drives have their own internal sensor to give the S.M.A.R.T. info a place to get the temp from. Just a guess though about the box sensor, I'm not sure where Dlink placed it?

I thought about doing this but got lazy...I get the same result (5-6 degrees cooler) by not closing the case completely. It is open just a smidge, so the power button still hits the switch inside the unit and the LEDs illuminate the lenses. Looks just like a closed-up unit...you can barely tell it's not snapped shut. And it looks better than anything I could have done with a dremel.

Actually, unless you turn my units over, you can't see any change in the appearance. I just hogged out the bottom of the front cover for venting. On the DNS-321, I had to leave the middle due to the way the plastic was molded, but the DNS-323 I was able to simply cut away almost the whole bottom. The cover still fits on the same way and looks exactly the same, it just has a nice vent in the bottom lip.
