Title: Should i update to new FW or stay with 1.20 ?
Post by: jerry6 on October 17, 2009, 07:29:44 PM
only problem is i have to go and reset all connections once every few days  if it drops connection , have to go into 1522 admin and reconnect through wireless page , with new FW will it reconnect on its own without having to go into admin pages ? It is being used as a bridge , not AP

If there is no active client connected to the bridge, it will drop the connection after a time.
Sometimes it does not reconnect when a client comes back.

I had this with all firmwares uo to 1.21. I simply restart the bridge then.

are you saying with 1.21 it does not need to be restarted  , when clients come back ?  if so it is worth updating from 1.20 .

If I start a client computer it connects back to the router.
But if I start my networked printer it wont come back.

This is still an issue. But in most cases I start the Bridge together with the clients and all is fine.

I had repeating wlan connection drops before 1.21 version. BUT I *think* it was a complex situation since there are multiple sources for drop outs: channel overlap in 2.4 GHz spectrum (only ch 6,11,20 or non-overlapping) causing errors, 5.2 GHz issues with thick walls etc; buggy WPA2 implementation (tkip part disturbs so use AES mode only); compatibility issues between Dlink stuff and Netgear as well as Intels WLAN h/w in computers etc. So... I clean up my environment and part of it was upgrading my DAPs to 1.21 fw. Now they have been stable and auto-connection seamlessly (I never check anything anymore, or just for the fun of it) for 1 month. So, yes my advice is:

-upgrade to fw 1.21 in the DAPs
-use non-overlapping channels in 2.4 GHz spectrum
-use 5.2 GHz for multimedia and when using the DAPs at bridges for wired equipment ie the DSM-510 or other media players
-Use WPA2 in AES mode only
