Title: P2P application broken - NOW RESOLVED!
Post by: Cheenah on October 18, 2009, 04:56:43 PM
The P2P application refuses to show "Download Tasks" or to start new downloads.  It was in the process of downloading 5 items and was working fine but it stopped downloading.  I checked the P2P page and the bottom half "Download Tasks" appears to start loading then it DISAPPEARS!  I have rebooted the NAS, stopped then started the P2P app, reinstalled P2P, uninstalled then reboot then reinstall the app.  I have done all sorts of browser fixes like dumping cache, trying different browsers on different PCs, I'm pretty certain it's not a browser issue.

Curiously, the Download Tasks frame starts to load before disappearing.  I have 2 screenshots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulycheenah/sets/72157622614135462/

I'm running Firmware 1.03.  I'm guessing the D-Link support will tell me to reload the NAS defaults, but gosh I'd hate to lose all my settings.  Is there a way to back up all the configurations I have made?

I've searched the forums and it doesn't seem anyone else has had problems with this, even the earlier Beta version firmware and P2P.  Help!!

I found how to back up the configuration so I will try resetting to defaults then reloading the config.  Wish me luck....

I did a config backup, restore to defaults and reload config settings.  No help.   ???

Have you looked into Fonz fun-plug.  I installed it using the 0.5 version from here http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/
and then Transmission from here
http://www.shadowandy.net/2009/01/transmission-142-for-dns-323.htm
And you don't need clutch, the html interface works great.
I know it says 323, but it works great on the 321.
been downloading torrents ever since.

jbray - do you know of an easy way to use Moblock on the DNS-321 ?  It's the Linux equivalent of PeerGuardian.

I've searched the forums and it doesn't seem anyone else has had problems with this, even the earlier Beta version firmware and P2P.  Help!!

Not true... I reported issues like these back in beta and was told my copy (of P2P client) was old.  I have seen many instances where the P2P client just stops working (terminates with exception) and others where something goes awry and everything seems to be going slow.

I have learned to deal with it though by understanding that ssh, screen, ffp and the filesystem can be used to make sure you can recover when this instability is encountered.

I have ffp installed so I can ssh to the little black box directly.  I run screen so when I disconnect my session is still running and I can pop back in later.  This is really helpful when I want to know what messages/exceptions were thrown by the p2p client.  To manually start / stop the p2p client from ssh you can call /mnt/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/P2P/start.sh or /mnt/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/P2P/stop.sh scripts.  When you are running in screen and execute the start script you will see messages output when interacting with the web interface.  For example, if you add a torrent via a URL you'll see the P2P client call wget to download the torrent and if you start/stop/delete the torrent you will see those messages as well.  This is the best I can do for logging...

Your symtoms sound like what I have seen where you may have left the torrents on for a couple of hours, and the upload/seeding has been going on.  I'm not sure if this is the culprit, but I do know from experience that if this p2p client has been running for a while it will eventually fail and slow the box down to where you want to just turn it off-on again.

When I experience this I will run the stop script and notice everything just peps up again.  Then comes the manual cleanup.  In /mnt/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/P2P/.torrents you'll find potentially three files for each torrent.  Their names will be identical except for the extension - .torrent, .fastresume, or .finished.  If there is a .finished and the file(s) is found in /mnt/HD_a2/P2P/complete then you can just remove the three torrent files.  Once this is cleaned up you can go ahead and run the start script.  Everything should run normally again.

One event that I know will cause the p2p client to break is if you've had the webgui open past the expiration limit and you click on the remove completed button.  Basically, the P2P page keeps updating becuase it pulls status via AJAX and not a post-back.  So when you click the button to remove the completed torrents the page determines that your session expired but the action to remove the torrents is still triggered.  But, by then it doesn't know the indexes of the torrents.  Rather than handle it gracefully the p2p client throws an exception and dies.

I'd love to see how they implmented the libtorrent code but I never got a response on seeing it.  For what it is worth I used to run chroot debian with rtorrent and it worked great, but this method is much easier for the layman (kinda?) and having it plugged in through the webui is a great feature.  But, there is still much progress to be made.

I am having the same problem. When I add a torrent to the queue, the pinwheel starts and when it seems that it has loaded the torrent, the bottom half of the interface disappears. It happened a week or so ago and I started to use my regular torrent client instead. Last night I tried again and it worked. My queue was back. After one download, I tried adding another torrent and it happened again.

Any thoughts? Is this just a bug that we have to wait to get fixed? Or is there anything I can do.

I'm not interested in any of the fun plug things as I like the webui.

Do you have any test torrent files that can be provided to replicate this. Preferably not something the RIAA or MPA will see as unfit for distribution...

i will have to find one. :)

Would there be a mechanism in place that would not allow these 'types' of torrents? Hypothetically?

To the moderator: here is a torrent I am trying to download.  This is not the only torrent I have problems with but you asked for an example.  This torrent is legit, a patch for the game Battlefield 2:
http://www.gameupdates.org/details.php?id=3740

I have created a video screen capture of what happens, you'll see I add a torrent, the page looks like it's starting the process then the lower half of the screen just goes blank.  See link below for video.  I can confirm the torrent is NOT downloading in the background, so it's more than the webpage GUI problem.

Are you able to download any torrents at this point or do only certain torrents give you an issue?
Title: Re: P2P application broken
Post by: Cheenah on October 21, 2009, 06:04:11 PM
I am not able to download any torrents, I do not know why the moderator would ask me if I am able to download any torrents at this time as I just posted a video an hour ago showing exactly how P2P is broken.  See the thread above, I am not alone with this problem.

This is not related to only certain torrents.  I have tried 7 different torrents from different websites all for different files.  I have re-tried starting the same torrents numerous times.  P2P has not worked once since it originally broke.

The problem is simple: there is a file on my NAS that is corrupt, be it HTML or similar or maybe even a config file.  This device isn't that complex.

I asked if you were able to download any torrents because you stated "This is not the only torrent I have problems with but you asked for an example." sounding as if you had some that worked I would have expected something like none of the torrent will work after this issue occurred. Anyways...We are currently investigating this issue.

I am also having the same P2P problems discussed here.  The strange thing is that the P2P app was working just fine when I have the 1.03 beta firmwares.  However, when I upgraded the the final 1.03 release version and the final P2P app, it started doing all the wonky things described.

What did D-Link change from the last 1.03 beta to the final release or from the beta P2P app to the final release.  It's good to know that the problem isn't unique to me.  Any D-Link support personnel working this bug?!?

According to the D-Link Engineer that posted on this issue, the last beta was the same code as the release 1.03.

Just an update: I still cannot use P2P, I'm pretty stumped by this.  I've tried everything under the sun.  Can anyone tell me if with telnet I can see the core system files?  Like the HTML stuff and the OS files?  I'll try to solve this on my own.

I fixed it!  I got P2P working again.

HOW I FIXED MY P2P APP:  I simply deleted all files and folders under the P2P shared folder on the NAS.  This might sound obvious but my share permissions (users and groups) were messed up, not sure if this was a NAS problem or something I did.  I was not seeing the P2P folder by default when I opened \\nas , I had to grant myself access to the root folder, then I could see P2P, then I deleted all the files/folders inside of complete and incomplete files and folders.  I added a new torrent and it immediately started to work again.  Yippee!

ive re-installed mine several times and everything is the same. I have also used macs and PCs with various browsers (Including Safari on the iPhone!)

I wish we had at least an update from the devs that they have found the issue. Im going to bail and install fun_plug soon.

We are looking into it. I do have a unit producing the same issues so now I just need to verify what triggered it. Unlike some of the original posters issues I can simply restart the service through the Add-On menu and I am able to continue to add/start/stop torrents. It does appear that this issue only came up after I stopped removing finished torrents from my completed folder.
Title: Re: P2P application broken - NOW RESOLVED!
Post by: djwiz1 on December 11, 2009, 11:06:46 PM
I am unable to download torrents again and this time, reinstalling p2p didn't fix the issue.

When I attempt to add a torrent, I get the pinwheel for a couple of seconds, but the torrent doesn't get added.  I checked the privs on the uncomplete folder and the folder isn't writeable.  I don't have permissions to make it writeable, even when I FTP in with a user with read/write access.

Any progress from D-Link on this issue?

In my experience, the fixes identified in this thread are only temporary.  The problem comes back.  Any additional suggestions would be welcomed.

Any new sugestion? I cant delete P2P app because im downloading a 44GB file and i have 85% yet.

Im being crazy with this problem.

2 months to get 85% of a 44GB torrent file and now i can't access status of this file.

First Dlink sell a gigabit storage that is NOT a gigabit speedy.

And now release a P2P program that's NOT secure to use.

Well, it's me again, and P2P is broken again.  As "wrf" stated more than once: any fix is temporary.  I am fairly certain this is the order of the problem:

1- download torrent
2- something goes awry, maybe a power failure on your end or a torrent issue
3- apparently all torrents in progress get stuck
4- delete all incomplete files in P2P folder
5- reboot
6- P2P works again

The problem is step 4.  I cannot delete the files and folders in the P2P incomplete folder.  It is driving me bonkers.  I am 99% certain that once I can delete the files P2P will start to work again, and it's a shame that I will lose the partial files that have downloaded but after days and days of struggling with this one simply wants the problem fixed.

DLink support: why can I not delete some files and folders?  I have perused the other threads here on the forum, it's time for everyone to realize that non-deletable files and broken P2P are one in the same problem.  And it's my bet that it's the #1 problem this unit faces.
Title: Re: P2P application broken - NOW RESOLVED!
Post by: ECF on January 19, 2010, 02:09:53 PM
I believe the file is not able to delete because it is tagged as owned by the P2P client and is seen as in use. Disable the P2P Client and try it if that does not allow you to delete the file reset the unit to factory defaults and try to delete.
Title: Re: P2P application broken - NOW RESOLVED!
Post by: C-Note on January 21, 2010, 05:12:46 PM
This procedure works for me:

1. Stop the P2P application
2. Delete the P2P application
3. Delete the most recently added torrent(s) when P2P stopped working...any torrents which were d/l fine before P2P messed up can be left in "incomplete" (they will still be there after you delete and reinstall P2P)
4. Reinstall the P2P application
5. P2P should be good to go again
5. Restart the torrents you still have in incomplete...all is not lost, the P2P program will continue where it has left off if you add the same .torrent file so you don't have to start d/ling from the beginning

And last but most importantly:

6. Wait for fix to P2P application!  ::)

(I can't complain too much though since I bought the DNS-321 not knowing there was a P2P application...I'm glad D-Link added it!)

FOR THE SECOND TIME: I fixed my P2P

What C-Note says above worked for me, with one more step: I had to stop/start P2P app after reinstalling it to get things working again.  I also deleted the entire P2P folder and subfolder.  C-Note is right: if you uninstall the P2P app you are able to delete the stuck/undeletable files and folders in the Incomplete folder.  Then reinstall P2P, start and stop it, I added a restart of the NAS in there as well.  It's working.

I'm getting rather tired of this device.  Honestly, I'm happy DLink moderators are here and active but they don't seem to talk to the programmers, and the programmers aren't working on the issue(s).  Give us the source code, Dlink, give it to us and we'll fix it.
Title: Re: P2P application broken - NOW RESOLVED!

Yes we do talk to the programmers and they are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in future firmware and/or add-on.

I just bought a DNS-321 and I installed the P2P add-on and no luck so far.  When I add a torrent it temporarily shows its loading then it disappears and stays blank.  I bought this NAS thinking it works well just like the DNS-323, I guess I will just have to wait for a future update to fix this issue :(

I had p2p installed and experienced same issue where I would add a torrent the screen would flash and would not show anything downloading.  I removed p2p but now when I try to install it I get message saying install faile please check hard drives. Both of my HD's show a status of normal and pass disk check. Any thoughts?

To fairmang and trumpjk: that problem is exactly what happened to me as well.  If you see the circle spinning a few times then disappear P2P is broken.  Go into Configurations then Advanced then Add Ons then stop P2P then start it again.  Try another torrent, that is often the quickest fix.
If the above does not solve your problem then stop P2P as described above then go to the P2P folders Complete and Incomplete and empty them out.  Often you'll have partial incompletes, delete them they are toast.  Go back and start P2P after cleaning out the 2 folders and try another torrent, it should work now.
If the above does not work then go into Add Ons and delete P2P, clean out the folders Complete and Incomplete, reboot the NAS, reinstall P2P and start another torrent.
The key is to clean out Complete and Incomplete.  You cannot delete incomplete torrent files while P2P app is running.  Good luck, if you plug away enough you'll fix it.  I have to do this every 2 or 3 months.

FYI, I ran into the same problem (spinning circle, then disappears). In my case, I believe it was the URL/pathname and certain characters in it (spaces changed to "%20"), which likely aren't compatible with Linux. I didn't try ESCing the spaces, but I can reproduce the problem consistently with pathnames containing spaces. When no spaces, it works fine.
