Alright... upgraded my DIR-655's firmware to enable Shareport (1.32NA, H/W rev. A3), installed the utility (1.10, Windows version, XP Pro/SP3) , plugged in my printer (Canon MX700)... and nothing. "No USB devices were found on the network," according to the SharePort window.
Printer is online and working if I plug it directly into the PC. Rebooted the router a few times, no go. Toggled the USB setting to WCN and then back to SharePort (rebooting in between, as directed), no go. About the only thing I haven't done so far is reboot the computer.
WTF?
Everything else works great, BTW...

If you have firmware 1.32 installed downgrade to 1.31 and use shareport 1.1.0. That fixed it for me.

have you guys tried the beta firmware with the beta shareport version?

If you have multiple subnets you need to set that in Shareport. You're not mentioning any details so the first 20 replies will be 'shot in the dark' guesses. So if you're smart you give us a lot more details....

I have no multiple subnets. Network setup is very basic, default 192.168.0.1 for the gateway, 255.255.255.0 netmask, blah blah blah. Aside from a bit of port-forwarding, there's nothing really going on beyond the stock setup in this router. If there was, I would have mentioned it.
I could paste in a results file from SIW if you really think more system details will help...
Oh, and BTW, I've tried plugging an external USB drive into the SharePort - a NexStar USB-to-SATA case with a 1TB drive in it. SharePort DOES see that, detects it as a "Sunplus Technology Inc. USB to Serial-ATA bridge", and I can connect to it (after a router reboot), but it doesn't appear in Disk Management... I gather I'm running into the drive-size limitation reported by others? In any case, the utility does appear to be communicating with the router's USB port, it just doesn't seem to know what to do with the printer...

Just tried that... router rebooted and came back up still as 1.32NA. *sigh*
