Title: Easy Search Utility Cannot Find My DNS-323
Post by: iteach on October 30, 2009, 06:08:12 PM
Please help :'( :'( :'(.
I have a DNS323 and it has been working fine until yesterday--I can no longer access my device from Easy Search Utility. When I start the Easy Search Utility program, I have no device listed under the "Network Storage Device" panel, which in fact is not the case. I can access all the partitions on the device from "My Computer". However, as I cannot access the Easy Search Utility, I can no longer make changes to the setup and add to bit-torrent. Can someone please show me how I can have the Easy Search Utility detecting the device again?

You only need the ESU to setup the unit the first time - you can do everything else from the web admin page - just open your browser and enter either the unit's name or ip address.

The ESU is most likely being blocked by the software firewall or security suite on your computer.

Actually, you never need the ESU utility.  I've never even seen it, and I've configured a number of these boxes for customers, and a DNS-321 and DNS-323 here.  As long as you can find the IP address of the box on your network, you can launch right in and use the web based management to configure the box.  After that, stock Windows networking can deal with the box just fine.

Actually, you never need the ESU utility

That might just depend on the firmware version and the "locale" the DNS-323 is being used in - so - whilst an English speaker in the United States, may never need the ESU, the same might not hold true for everyone else.

I have not looked at the recent versions of the ESU but in the early versions it was the only way to set - let's call it a "code page" (remember those ?) that would determine which non english languages would be supported.  I'm not certain of the exact term, and I'm too lazy to load the ESU to find out, because I, like you, don't need or use it.

The need for this to be done may have disappeared in the 1.04 upgrade - when unicode support was added to Samba.

The ESU was also the method used to install the BitTorrent client.

That could be, I use English and I don't use BitTorrent, so I didn't miss either of those. :)
