Title: DNS-321 firmware 1.03 nfs server rsize/wsize options
Post by: cell35 on November 01, 2009, 08:17:44 AM
I recently flashed my DNS-321 box with 1.03 firmware, and enabled the NFS server. The NFS shares are mounted correctly on both server and clients I can stream the DVD movie from DNS-321 to my WDTV box, however I've seen some performance issues when streaming Bly-Ray movies. I've noticed that the NFS option, rsize/wsize on DNS-321 was set to 8192 by default, I'm wondering if there is a way to change that option to 16KB or 32KB? Does this version of NFS server support NFS v3 at all?

I can't answer your question as to how to change the default sizes but I do have a question...

How is your NAS connected to the WDTV box?  Is it all with CAT 5/6 cable and then are you running gigabit all the way?  Are you running wireless and if so what type?  I'm trying to see if there is a bottleneck in the way to transfer the data.

I'd be surprised if there was enough memory to set the NFS block sizes much larger than 8mb.  The total memory on the box is 64mb, so a 32mb block would use half the available RAM. :)

My DNS-321, WDTV and a couple of PCs are connected through a Gigabit switch. All my media server, media player conections are wired with CAT/ 5/6 cable.

I have a vista PC running with haneNFS server, with rsize/wsize=8KB I have trouble to stream the movie from my vista PC to WDTV box, but with rsize/wsize=32KB everything is prefect. I'd say the bottlenneck to stream Blu-Ray movie from DNS-321 to WDTV box is the transfer size of NFS server.

I was talking about either 16KB or 32KB transfer size, not 32MB

What I like about your response is you have done your homework.  Many people simply just ask questions without trying to find the solution first.

This may not be the route you want to take but would Media Tomb help you?  There is a program called fun plug for the NAS which includes Media Tomb.  Just search google for "fun plug fonz" and you will find it was originally developed for I think the DNS-323 but works fine on the DNS-321.
