Title: D-Link RMA'd my Rev A1 for a....Rev A1 ???
Post by: NKYadav on November 02, 2009, 05:35:33 PM
So, I am sorta miffed that they replaced my A1 with another A1, but it looks to be brand new OOB, and if it is refurbished I cannot tell - original S/N sticker on back (not a second one placed on top of the original) all new parts, no scratches....
Thing is, The one I bought from Best Buy has an OLED that is aqua colored - this one has a much more blue colored one (almost matched the power LED in front of the router). And, it ships with 1.15.
So, my question is simple: 1.15 seems to be stable enough for most folks, but there was a lot of screaming going on previously. I know the new 1.21 Beta 3 is out, but I simply do not have the time to fool with this anymore - I need it working like it should.
So, should I stick with 1.15, or revert to 1.13, 1.12, or even 1.02? Or is this even possible (from the links on the firmware DL pages, I'd say it is, b/c the only warning that I can see is when going from 1.1x or 1.0x to 1.2x)?
Also, Why isn't the DynamicDNS updater working if you manually set it to a different host? I have been using No-IP with the DGL-4300 and the DIR-525s I have with no issue, but even though the DGL-4500 says it connects to the updater, I routinely get a notification from No-IP every ~2 months that I need to authenticate with their servers or else my host gets removed....

Therein lies the problem. It *doesn't* work. Not the way it should, not the way my DGL-4300 worked for years.
Currently, I am sitting at Firmware Version : 1.15, 2008/10/29 , and I have watched my router reboot itself - something that even my previous PITA 4500 running 1.21NA did not do (although that one locked up more times than I can count).
I was trying to get an opinion on which seems the be the most stable firmware for the 4500 series, as I don't want to 'upgrade' again only to have the same problems all over again. Plus, my first year is almost up - I'd like to know now.
I suppose I'll have to run tests again myself, as I simply cannot have the router randomly rebooting itself like this - having 4 machines networked, including a laptop that alternates between wired and wireless (N), and now a Motorola DROID that supports WiFi, and a brand new laptop that also supports wireless N, I need to know.
IIRC, the 1.15 cannot be downgraded to previous versions, but I can use 1.16, and if I upgrade to 1.2x versions, I am stuck in that build set, right?

yep, if you go past 1.16, ur stuck. I have been using both beta 03 and 08 versions of 1.21 and I can stay since using both and currently on Beta 08, wired is very stable. Yes there are some issues with the wireless. I presume that DLink is aware and probably working on them. The release version of 1.21 is not stable all the way around. My buddy who I also play XBL with also has a 4500 and is on 1.21 Beta 03. He's very happy with this version.

Well, I think that I need to ditch 1.15 for something better. On top o everything else, it is reporting that my Motorola DROID is connected using Wireless N @ 19 Mbps whereas the phone itself is only rated for Wireless B/G, and is showing connected using Wireless G @ 54Mbs....
I'd say that it is a major problem when the router is reporting something erroneous like that.
Time to go play - I already have most of the firmware downloaded, but I am going to go back and take a look just to be sure in case I missed a Beta here or there.
Thanks for the info, FN.

FW passed 1.13......
Set logging to only log Firewall & Security and Critical.
That by itself removed all my issues with this router, I was about to scrap it until I read the beta fw thread and someone mentioned the logging issue.

1.21b08 seems to be a lot more stable than any of the previous 1.2x firmwares that I have tried. Wireless seems to have issues, but TBH, it is working better than the 1.15 that was installed on this replacement router as I received it.
I have a Motorola DROID, and at home, it is almost always on WiFi (if it supported N instead of just G, it would be on all the time - I'd have no connectivity issues throughout the house). With 1.15 I was constantly having issues, especially when waking the phone from its version of 'standby' - I'd have to turn off the WiFi and then turn it back on for it to work. I have 3G service in my area, so it is not a major problem, but it still is a lot slower than WiFi. And this was *after* the 2.01 DROID firmware update as well.
With 1.21b08, the DROID never acts like it has no connectivity, and although I have unusually high errors and dropped packets on the wireless channel, it still out performs the 1.15 firmware.

Good to hear NKY, ya Wired is stable. Hope that WiFi will get some attention. I see the same WiFi issues, lots of errors and dropped packets. I'm going to drop back to Beta 03 maybe to day and see if it does the same thing for WiFi. Both betas were stable wired though. Now work that FW and 4500. LOL Happy New Years.

lmfao - enjoy the testing.
TBH, I don't believe it was the firmware that I had issues with before, it was the hardware itself - I never experienced the reboots on the old device, but it sure as hell just flat out locked up. This machine, with 1.15, was at least restarting as opposed to just sitting there twiddling its thumbs....
I might leave it at b08 for now b/c I know I was complaining about b03 and errors and dropped packets before with the previous device. So, it's not surprising that it has not changed much - but as long as my DROID is no longer complaining I am a slightly happier man.

Well sure hope the DROID will be happier. I put B03 back on to do some more testing on Wireless N only. Seems a bit more stable than B08 Wireless. Not getting disconnects AFAIK at this time. I played XBL till about 2am this am and Wired seem good too. I'm happy so far. I have turned off all logging accept for Firewall & Security, System and Critical. Not sure if that makes any diff for me yet. Guess trying to find that happy place. LOL. Happy New Year everyone.
