Title: Workaround for 1.3x lock ups
Post by: Julia on November 03, 2009, 05:10:46 AM
I’ve bought DIR-655 A4 1.21WW 3 days ago and updated it to 1.32NA right away. The router hung up every 1-2 hours at this order:
1. Web interface goes down. Internet runs slowly. Sometimes this fixes of itself.
2. Internet goes down, switch works. Only manual reboot helps.
3. Switch goes down. Only 10 sec reset helps.
I read very many threads from this forum yesterday but not found working solution anywhere. It seems no one knows what the reason of lock ups is. I installed ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Beta/Firmware/dir655_fw_132b04NA_beta01.zip. Web interface started to work much faster, but the router continued to hang.
The issue reminded one Kerio Winroute bug to me. If for example FTP protocol inspector is turned on for 21 port and traffic to 21 port is not FTP protocol Winroute goes crazy: it tries to connect to remote host thousands times per second to different ports and eats 100% of 1 cpu core. Computer & network work very slow at this time. This issue often arised when I used torrents. Winroute has this bug for many years and I wonder why developers still haven’t fixed it.
So I just disabled Firewall SPI and my router works perfectly for last 20 hours. Yeap, this is solution for all 1.3x users :)
However I still can’t add rules to port forwarding and similar pages. Lycan, please fix port forwarding & SPI :)

I am having the same problems.  Freezing and lockups.

@DLINK can I send you my router to flash back to 1.21 instead of 1.31NA/1.31?

You'll need to turn DNS relay off in your settings, guys. That will fix connection loss problems with the internet.

I've tried this already and this doesn't help anyhow. The issue is in stateful protocol inspector (Firewall SPI). All 1.31-1.32NA users have to turn it off. Only this will solve router lock ups. This has helped me with Winroute & D-Link and I know what I am saying.
Maybe you are talking about another issue. But this thread exactly about lock ups.

My router works fine with the firewall on.

Tried it, didnt work at all.  I think it made it worse.

My router works fine with the firewall on.

Same here
(it only drops my Cisco VPN connection from time to time)

but perhaps if you use specific firewall- or internet security software on your machines, it may interfere with the routers SPI firewall.

The issue will arise soon if you use P2P for example.

Not really, I have it on and I can torrent for days without issues. I have DNS Relay, Shareport, UPnP and HTTPS Web interface off though.

I use P2P almost every day and have SPI turned on. Turning off DNS-relay fixed it for me.

I am new (today) to this forum, but had the problem with locking up from day one with my DIR-655 H.W. vA4, and FW v1.21. D-Link tech support had me change from WPA-2 to WEP and disabled WPS. I was lurking just now as I was considering updating my firmware and downloading the Shareport utility so that I can access my printer (connected to my desktop) with my laptop (using the DWA 160 adapter). BTW, both machines are XP SP3 and are using Norton Internet Security 2009. I know, I haven't used Norton for years but I got persuaded by a friend who asuured me that it isn't the resourece hog, etc. that was a problem before. BTW, I am total noob with RF routers and adapters.

So...I'd like to have good security but still be able to allow guests to (simply) connect with their laptops etc. to the Internet and be able to print when they visit (WPS?). I don't want to sacrifice connection speed (currently tops out at 270Mbps) security or stability. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Probably you should start a new thread for your question(s) LABL....

But WEP has been cracked for several years at least....its better than nothing, but if you have any possibility of others in your vicinity grabbing your signal, you REALLY need to be using at least WPA, and moreso WPA2 for encryption with AES cipher if you want the router to go for the magical 300 Mbps.
