Title: DNS343 recovery procedures needed

Hi,

I've had one my 343's running solid for several months with no issues and no changes. upon coming home from work tonight, i noticed one my units was non-responsive. i couldn't reach it via web gui or ping. i then checked the unit physically, and it showed that it was still up/running.

i hit the power unit on the front of the unit several times and it says system halting. it has had that error message scrolling for about 5m now, and i'm not sure if it's hung or not?  >:(

so my questions are as follows:

1. should i pull the power plug on it to force it to shut down
2. either way, once it comes back up how do make sure the data is still intact
3. did dlink ever add fsck back in and does it work
4. any other suggestions

one other tidbit, it looks like the oled display is semi corrupted..

wonder if that matters?

ok, i gave up waiting after 30m.

pulled the plug waited a few and plugged back in.

came back up, everything appears to be good, all drives passed quick SMART test, and status shows RAID 5 sync completed.

trying a scandisk just to make sure all is well.

WEIRD!!! ???

even weirder, when i start the scandisk here is what i got:

SCAN DISK RESULT :

it then asks me to reboot the unit?!?

this keeps getting better and better

rebooted tried scandisk again, it doesn't work at all it seems.

holy snikeys..

now my volume 1 is gone!! from the RAID configuration screen:

i.e. there is no volume at all on the unit..

if i just lost all my data by trying to run a scandisk, i'm going to be f**king PISSED..

just like windows, a reboot fixes everything..

i give up, it seems that touching the unit just makes things worse..

if anyone can explain any of this to me, i must admit my curiosity is piqued at this point.

when you run a disk scan the Volume_1 will be unmounted. This is the reason why you won't see the volume on the status page.

But i cannot give you a reasonable explanation why scan disk is failing.

Execute a factory reset of your unit and try it again. Back up your data before doing anything else!

like i said i'm going to leave well enough alone. the unit is in production now, so i can't afford to play with it any more.

i recall all kinds of issues with the scandisk in previous releases, so this doesn't surprise me that it's still broken / buggy. i will trust in ext3 / RAID to protect me.. ;)

Hi,

What's likely going to happen, is that one of the HDD's will eventually fail and you will not be able to recover gracefully.  IMHO, you should look to backup all of the data off the volume(s) and then proceed to resolve the issue you are experiencing.

This may mean:

- Factory reset
- Reformat HDD's
- Rebuild RAID
- Perform a Scan Disk
- Copy data back to the volume
- Perform a Scan Disk


Any problems along the way should be a red flag to stop.

interesting i just had another unit become unresponsive over the holidays. this time i was able to hit the power button the front of the unit and shut it down succesfully.

anyone else seen this yet? i'll start a new thread with a proper title
