Title: Possible Bugs - Daily Log Sending & Failed Drive Reports
Post by: JoeSchmuck on November 14, 2009, 06:55:49 AM
I have been unable to get the daily logs to email and when a drive is pulled the report lists the wrong drive slot.

First I can state that the email address etc... is setup properly as I do recieve test emails, drive failures, S.M.A.R.T. results, and space status when enabled.

1) Send Log File, when set to Daily does not send an email.  I have the time set to 12:00 and I never receive a daily log.
2) If I turn off the NAS and pull the left drive then power up the NAS I receive a report the right drive failed.  It's the opposite for the other drive.

My NAS is a Rev A2 and I'm running firmware 1.03.

Ditto here too, at least about the email for daily logs. I've never gotten that to work, but I do get an email on space available each day.

Same firmware too, 1.03.

No email for logs either.
I do get space status emails but times of sending these fluctuate wildly. They are almost random.

I get the admin messages, but I've never enabled the daily logs, I get enough SPAM. :D

I have all email from the NAS filtered into a seperate email folder this way it's not mixed in with the stuff I want to read.  If I desire to read a NAS message then I can open it up, or just delete them all.

I only have messages that pertain to the health of the drive coming to me.  Since I have a vast amount of reserve storage available on the NAS units, I feel no need to get daily capacity reports.  However, a drive failing is something I would like to know about! :D

I wanted the daily logs so I could keep a record of all activity.  I don't need daily space reports, I have lots of room and if it gets full, hopefully I'll see a report for that too.

Yeah I seem to be having this issue as well it does work however if I set it to weekly.

I have my space status email set to daily and that works. I just looked again now and my email for all other alerts was actually set to weekly. I'm switching to daily at 6 pm, I'll see if that kicks things into gear for me.  ;)

How did you manage to set a time interval on anything but the space status?  AFAIK, any other alert comes in when it happens.  Even the space status has a maximum interval of one day, I'd like to see an option to have that less often.

Where it says Send Log File, when I check that box, I get options. With Daily I get the time of day to send it. With Weekly I get the time of day and the day of the week to send it. With Monthly I get the time of day and the day of the month.

You don't get the same options?   ???

Ah, the log file, not the space report.  I've never tried to send the log file. :)

Did you do something different?  Maybe it's related to the date?  I'll set mine up again to see if it starts.

I just set it up for weekly and set the day for that same day on that Friday and it worked then decided to check it out again on Monday on daily and it work then send today as well.

Actually mine has been setup for weeks, just verified it.  I just changed the time from midnight to 1:01 AM.  Let's see if it starts working.

Well, I have just finished trying almost all the hours in the daily and all the days in the weekly, none have worked for me. Yet it sends the space status every day and it will send the SMART test results when I run the drive tests, but it sends them immediately. Very funky indeed!  ???

I wonder if maybe it has to do with what options are enabled in the email alert page? Currently I have all my options enabled while trying to get it to send anything but just the space status.

This issue should be resolved in the next firmware release. Removing the BT client should fix the issue if you must have it working daily or downgrading to 1.02.

Stupid question time... How do I remove Bit Torrent from the DNS-321 running firmware 1.03?  I didn't even know it was supported, shows you how much I used that feature.

I tried a search but I kept getting other NAS's in this forum, not the one we are discussing here.

Add-ons...did you install the BitTorrent client?

Nope, did not add any add-ons or Fun Plug either.  Just stock with firmware 1.03.

I see. That could be the cause in some cases anyways this issue has been confirmed and should be resolved in the next firmware release.

No problem, I can wait.  I'm just happy the NAS is working very reliable, for what I'm using it for.  Now if you could add a turbo charger and headers to this bad boy, it would be smokin' at this price.

Just an idea. I am not home, so I can not verify this, but I believe the DNS-321 reports both the drive type and serial number on the management panel. If you had a real life drive failure you could check the serial number of the remaining drive and thus identify which one is failed. I am pretty sure the serial number is printed on the HDD itself too.

Relative references (left/right) are confusing because depending on which direction you look at it left can turn to right... Unless and until the machine has clearly labeled (A/B or 1/2) drive bays reporting the serial number of the drive in error would be a nice plus. Maybe in 1.4? (Of course for this the unit would have to store the serial number of the last used drive for each bay.)

I know the email for a drive failure only references left or right.  I agree that you should be able to check the hard drive status page to figure out which one it is and the serial number, at least of the good one.
