Title: Can't Map Drive on Windows 7
Post by: godwheel on November 23, 2009, 12:45:17 PM
Hey guys,

A weird thing is happening. My Windows 7 can see my DNS-321 if I go to the IP address via the browser. However, when I try to MAP the DNS-321 via Windows Explorer, it says the mapping failed.

I typed: \\nameofnas\volume_1\
also tried just \\nameofnas\
also tried \\ip address\

When I tried to use the Easy Search utility, I get the same error.

The DNS-321 is seen by my PS3 and also my Macbook in the network, so I'm going to say it is not my router that is causing the problem...

Any tips?

Thanks!

What happens with \\ip address? What address is it displaying in the easy search utility? Can you access the device iat this address in the browser? Do you have any user controls setup in the OS?

Mapping using the IP address gives me the following (same error):

Windows cannot access \\192.168.0.3
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To identify [...]

Error code 0x80070035.

I try to troubleshoot and get:
Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

Using the easy search utility, I get the following:

Try using native Windows 7 to map the drive.  I have no problem in XP or Windows 7 mapping to the DNS-321.

I'm very agreeable today so I agree with ECF, what is your IP address?  Are you running 192.168.0.x ?  I know I use 192.168.1.x for my network.  The other thing you could try is enable Recieve DHCP and reboot the NAS.  I myself never used the utility, I just setup my NAS for a static address and then mapped the drive letter in Windoze.

Hi,

Yeah, I had the drive mapped before regularly via Windows Explorer in Windows 7 RC.

This weekend I bought a new router (D-LINK 825). Everything is working good -- but I had to unmap the DNS-321 that I had previously mapped so I could re-map it with the network IP range that I had set up for the new router. My IP addresses on the router are at 192.168.0.X to 192.168.0.XX

I don't think it is the router because every other product in the house sees it (and maps it) just fine -- including Ubuntu also running on this PC.

I tried rebooting the NAS, but it is no-go. I did not enable DHCP on the NAS because it advices not to do so if you have a router assigning IPs.

I'm attaching a picture of the full network map...

Any other ideas? Could there be something on the network card or something in windows that I might have disabled network drive mapping?

Thanks guys!

What anti-virus software is loaded on the PC?

Currently AVG Free, Malware Bites, Windows Security Essentials.

Thanks :)

Disable all your antivirus and firewall software on your Windows 7 PC.  If it makes you feel better, unplug your internet connection from your router.  See if you can make it work from there.  If you can, re-enable your software one piece at a time.  Reboot your PC for each one just to ensure it's active before moving on to the next.  Hopefully it is a firewall issue so you can resolve the problem.

Glad to see your network is all on the sake network address range.  Sometimes switching to a new router changes everything.

- If you are using static IP on the DNS (not DHCP) then you should verify that the router did not give the same IP address to some other box. Usually you can configure the range of IP addresses that the router provides via DHCP. Make sure that your static address is outside of that range. If you change DHCP settings on your router you should restart the router and then restart all the machines on the network, so they get their new addresses.

- Assuming that your IP addresses are OK (which is quite possible since you seem to have no trouble accessing the DNS from your PS3 / Macbook), this is probably a Win7 issue. Antivirus program should not make any difference, but firewalls could. You should check the Windows Firewall settings...

- I think Win7 creates 'networks' not simply by IP range, but also taking the MAC address into account. So when you put in your new router Win7 recognized it as a new 'network' and asked you if it should be configured as 'home' or 'work' or 'internet'. This (I assume, I am NOT a Win7 expert) has to do with firewall settings. If you did NOT specify 'home' as network type, Win7 might simply not let you mount drives from the network. I am just guessing. See if you can check / change the network type.

- (Actually this 'network' thing is a feature, not a bug, in Win7. They probably let you specify both firewall and IP - DHCP vs. static - parameters by 'network', so if you move your laptop between home and work/school it will always recognize which network it is on and use the appropriate settings. But - like all new features - takes time for us, users, to figure, how to use / setup these things. And it is a bit confusing that when you replace your router it calls it a 'new network' even though for you is the same old, only with a new router.... Again, I am speculating.)

I network to my NAS with Windows 7 exactly the same way I did with Xp or Vista.

Thank you all for all your help.

I just installed Windows 7 Professional (was running RC) and everything is hunkydory.

I hope it continues to work like this.

:)

I can see no reason why Windows 7 should suddenly stop working, none of mine have suddenly had any issue talking to the D-Link NAS boxes. :D

Configure Windows 7 to connect to Samba servers

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy
Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Send LM & NTLM responses

Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

You can search google for Windows 7 connecting to Samba

There's no special trick to get Windows 7 working with the DNS-321, all three of my Windows 7 machines talk to it just fine.

I am having a similar issue and would appreciate some advice.  For a while, Windows 7 worked just fine with the DNS-321.  Lately, however, even when mapping using easy search, transfers fail after about 8gb.   I am transferring large files (30 gb) of Bluray material that I have want to transfer from my discs to the DNS321 for archival purposes.

I seems like the DNS321 is somehow not responding to network requests.  Any ideas on how to keep it "alive"?

I've transferred 20+ gigabyte Acronis True Image backup files with no issues to the DNS-321, I don't know of any reason it should fail in the middle of a large transfer.  Could this be something else in the network causing the failure?

Yes, I appears that another device was grabbing the same ip address.  I moved the static IP to a new number and it looks like things are working again.  Thanks.

You should always assign any static IP addresses outside the range of your DHCP server, which will prevent this issue. :)
