Title: How to set up a secure hotspot?
Post by: langba on December 08, 2009, 05:53:42 PM
My  boss just bought and installed a DIR-655 in the restaurant where I work hoping to draw in customers with a "hotspot".

Very, very sorry for the quotes but he always air-quotes the word hotspot. LOL Besides, I told him better food would draw in more customers, not gimmicks, but that's beside the point!

First thing I did was go to network and I could see all the office computers in the restaurant.

PANIC ATTACK!!!  At least he recognized there m.i.g.h.t. be a small security hole somewhere and went back to no wireless. But he wants it in sooner than later.

I said, "No problem. I've set up wireless routers before."  Except this DIR-655 is a problem.

I cannot find any settings that could make this a secure hotpot device. In Windows, I would call it Network Discovery. I don't see an analogous equal setting on this router.

Please help me turn this thing into a secure hotspot.

Many, many thanks in advance.

You might want to consider more suited hardware for this useage. The DIR is not intended to be a dedicated hotspot router. You can keep the guest access seperated from the LAN (VLAN methode underneath) in the lastest firmwares but that's really all you can do.
