Title: Disk Full Error
Post by: JavaLawyer on December 16, 2009, 05:24:34 AM
I am receiving a "Disk Full" error on my DNS-343 OLED and would like to understand what triggers the message and how to stop it.

DNS343 Setup (Standard Volumes):

HDD1 (2 TB) with 400 GB free
HDD2 (1.5 TB) with 22 GB free
HDD3 (1.5 TB) with 1 TB free
HDD4 (1.5 TB) with 1.3 TB free

Is the disk full error based on the percentage of disk space used for each volume or is there a minimum unused space required on each volume to avoid triggering the message?  I would like to shift data around to ensure I stay below the error message threshold... unless there is a way to disable the message altogether.

Please help.

Can someone at DLink please provide some guidance on this issue?

Are these 4 seperate volumes? The error is triggered when the volume is at 98% full (I believe, been a while since I checked the %).

From first glance the only volume near that is HDD_2. There is currently no way to disable this message on the OLED.

Yes, the DNS-343 contains 4 independent volumes.  I will shift files from HDD2 to another volume to bring the percentage full below 98% and report back as to whether the message goes away.

Thanks for your help.

I brought the percentage full down to 95.7% (and rebooted) and the message still persists.  If we assume the percentage full threshold is 95% (I haven't gone that far yet), then this is a colossal waste of space.

Assuming a 95% threshold: a 2 TB volume will require wasting 100 GB of usable space just to avoid the flashing error message.  Scaling this up to all 4 HDD slots on the DNS-343 equates to 400 GB of wasted space to avoid this flashing error message.

The threshold level should be user customizable or (at the very least) contain an option to disable.

I'm also very interested to disable the flashing OLED message: "CAUTION!! DISK IS FULL!!" completely, because my OLED goes broken!
I noticed on the OLED drive status page in the background light shadow message "CAUTION!! DISK IS FULL!!" burned into the OLED !!! >:(

My OLED sleep display settings are set to 10secs, but it doesn’t help turn the OLED off.
Is there any way to disable completely the OLED?

My DNS343 is now 6 months in use and I also think if this is a warranty case?

Assuming at least one HDD is almost full, your DNS-343 isn't broken (i.e. the aforementioned warranty). I believe the error message is hard coded in the firmware to automatically display when at least one of the HDDs reaches a pre-defined percentage-full level, and supersedes the user defined OLED sleep settings. I have two DNS-343s, each of which displays this annoying message non-stop 24x7.

This is crap.  I just found this error message.  my 1.5 TB hard drive is full with 71 Gigs left on the drive!   ???

This is ****.  I just found this error message.  my 1.5 TB hard drive is full with 71 Gigs left on the drive!   ???

If you work out the math (where 1024 GB = 1 TB), 71 GB free is > 95% full.  I have yet to discover the usage threshold that triggers the error because I refuse to sacrifice > 400 GB of storage ( > 100 GB for each 2 TB HDD).  I'm hoping that this error is removed or a user defined threshold is implemented in a future firmware update.

This really MUST be implemented in a future firmware ASAP. It's a major problem if it ends up burning the OLED.

Hi Javalawyer, what is the f/w version of your 343?

There is a reason for everything.  Can someone from D-Link at least explain why?  Is it because the NAS is too slow that a pagefile or cache system needs to be in place for the unit to function properly?  and that is why the unit requires 2%-5% disk space at all times?

Ok, I may understand that, but in my opinion burning the o-led is the main issue. The simplest solution would be to change the "d-link" text into the screen saver with a "disk full" message instead of showing a message that burns the o-led.

I would like to believe that there's a reason for everything, but from my experience, that's usually not the case.  Reserving HDD space makes sense, but you would think that the documentation, OLED display, or web interface would communicate that necessity.  My initial thought was that the error message was designed as a warning notifying users that their backup storage capacity is running low.

In any event, I haven't detected any performance degradation with either of my two DNS-343s displaying this 24x7 flashing message.  I'm still hopeful that the next firmware update will address this issue.

You can press the "Next" button to make the "Disk Full" message to disappear. It will come out again if you reboot the device or some files are being deleted thus the counter being reset and being triggered again when some files are being copied.

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. . . but that's not much consolation for a device intended for regular file copying/deleting.

The latest beta firmware (v1.04) resolves the "Disk Full" error through the inclusion of a check box option of deactivate the message.

Thank you D-Link.

I want to buy DNS 343 so bad... but the ONLY thing that holding me back is that there are many many reliability issues with the firmware. I have learned that without the firmware 1.04 beta, the fan speed could go from stop to full power skipping the medium power all together, which result in 343 to crash. In addition this display issue is one more reason why I am waiting to buy this product.

I want to buy this with 4 WD Green 2Tb drives with RAID 5. Reliability and dependability is my #1 priority. I love Dlink products. But I would like to know WHEN WILL WE be able to get 1.04 official version? I will not buy this unit before you release the 1.04 official.

You should start a new thread for this subject matter to avoid confusion with the existing topic.

Hello
I'm sure that the "caution disk full" problem is more serious
it happens here
when introducing a third brand new barracuda 1.5 TB with the seal form the manufacturer not broken
3 simple disks
disk 1 is empty
disk 2 is empty
disk 3 is in ininitializing phase
firmware was upgraded from 1.02 to 1.03
the formatting phase terminated correctly event with the disk full message
but after  the reboot , the disk is not detected and the nas ask me to format it again and again

firmware 1.04 is still announced as beta , is it a good idea to use it ?

Firmware v1.04 is worth the upgrade. . . Although I'm not too sure what's causing your formatting issue.
