Title: 1.21NA/DGL-4500 lags up and locks.
Post by: NewDlinkUser on December 17, 2009, 11:37:00 AM
I guess I never should have updated, I was using something like 1.02 on an A1 router.  Now it slows down progressively after running for about 4-5 days, almost like a memory leak or some internal file getting too large and jamming everything up, and then it has to be reset.  Then it works fine.  Repeat.

After looking around here I guess I should've checked the forums before updating, I would've seen the issues everyone is having with the firmware.

Is there any fix?  I notice I can't downgrade the firmware.... :(

disable DNS Relay.  Helps a lot for many of us.

What is the date code next to the FW version? Need to see if you have the latest FW or initial 1.21NA FW. Theres been 2 beta FWs and those have fixed the lag and reboot issues of the router. I'm on a A1 unit using 1.21NA,  2009/11/23 which is beta 08 FW. Been great since, wifi still needs some work though.

I have A1 and 1.21 firmware and am having exactly the same issues with lag and N mode only. I can switch back to G only on my on my DGL-4500 or my DGL-4300 and run perfectly, same radio channel and all 86% to 98%. On N only or N and G I have weaker signal strength 58%to 68% to all DWA-160s and my xbox360 adapters.

I'm sure the Dlink is aware of the issues and probably will get them fix in next build. I hope. Merry Christmas.

D-link didn't even try to fix the fw for this router until they were threatened with a class action lawsuit and only then did they start working on it.  I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for anything.

I sure am hoping they are working on thiese issues and plan on resolving them quickly, in warranty or not with customers. I am sure with all the internet traffic on these issue customers have not only left Dlink products but other customers are steering clear of what used to be a solid product. Does anyone have any idea why the DGL-4500 is stable using wirless G, but not wireless N mode (lags, signal, drop etc.). Ihad to run another test of my own and borrowed my fathers linksys and it works fine in N mode. My opinoin is the A1 hardware doesn't like 1.21 frimware or the 1.21 firmware has a major bug in it.

I presume it's a FW bug issue and not HW related. I hope after the holidays DLink will continue to figure the issue out and get it fixed. I to have ran a different Wireless router, N Mode only and don't see the same issues as with FW 1.21 B08 loaded currently. Im being patient. Good things will come to those who wait for it. Wireless is very stable right now.

*****************************

All FW greater than 1.13

Set logging to only log Firewall & Security and Critical.

That by itself removed all my issues with this router,  I was about to scrap it until I read the beta fw thread and someone mentioned the logging issue.

@ Furry:  The firmware is 1.21NA,  2009/07/09

@ Koshia:  Disabled, but unfortunately it didn't help.

Since your at v1.21NA 2009/07/09 from the main dlink web page, this version has bugs and isn't stable. I too had this build and did not have a good time with it. I would update to the Beta 03 or 08 from the ftp site and do a clean update and run the 4500 with out changing anything and see how it goes. The FW that you have currently loaded was not a good build. Let us know how Beta 03/08 works for you. I'm using Beta 03 now and it's Good.

I've been running 1.21NA since roughly the time of its release.  Not only would the router lag and lock-up (especially when attempting to upload large files, such as attempting to upload video to YouTube), but it would also occasionally cause my cable modem to reset.  I had to unplug my router about once every 48 hours or so.  Not wanting to risk installing the beta firmware, I scoured various different forums, and have found settings that make the router very stable.  I've disabled DNS Relay, WISH, and GameFuel.  With all of those disabled, on 1.21NA, the router is behaving better than it ever has before, and I've owned it for almost a year.

Kewl, glad someone has been able to find configurations that work to fix the Released NA version of 1.21. I wish I had this info back then however since alot of us use XBL and or a PS(#) station online, gaming and gamefuel is a need for some of us. I wonder if a Beta 03 would do you good. You can always go back to 1.21NA Release. Just a suggestion. Beta 03 is working for me really well. No reboots or disconnects or lag times. I'm sticking with it until they do another release after Beta 08.

My 4500 still has FW 1.02 on it, and I've found over time that I get the best results with all of those off as well. I was running WISH for a while, but it seems to run better wired and wireless with it turned off. I have Wifi Protected Setup turned off as well. I bought mine the first week they were in-stock at CompUSA. Heh... So, pretty much since release.

I agree with Hank, I have mine set up with Wish and WiFi Protected Setup off. IF you don't use them, no need for them to be on.

FurryNutz,
I was wondering if you could provide me with the link to the latest beta FW version that you've been using since I have HWA2 and FW1.21NA dated 2009/07/09 and have been having the router lock up every 2-3 days requiring a reboot.  I have also been having many of the other issues described throughout these posts such a WiFi dropping every so often on N or mixed mode N and G (2.4GHz) and data transfers larger than 80-100MB failing from my wired NAS to wireless client.

Thanks!  I updated the firmware after backing up my config but upon loading the config the router locks up and must be reset.  It seems as though I may have to put all of the settings back in again manually which is a bit time consuming since I have set up 11 DHCP reservations, mac filtering amongst other settings.  Is there any way around this that your aware of?  For now I put the firmware back to the 1.21NA since it will at least operate so-so and I'll have everything set up.

AFter the FW update did you perform a Factory Reset then re-apply the saved Configuration file? I haven't seen this issue after reapplying the file after a FW update. I have been using the same file here since 1.21NA.

I did not and will try that next time.  By factory reset do you mean resetting the router through the interface or by holding in the button on the back for 10 sec.?

I have to thank all of the entries on the forum. I purchased this router just this month, I have set it up, had some issue with WI-FI and found the Shareport didn't work with firmware 1.15 which came with the router. So I loaded the 1.21NA firmware so I could take advantage of the Shareport option and hopefully correct the WI-FI issue. I need to have the 2.4 GHZ working so I can communicate with an other laptop and a older printer server. So with that setting along with the other suggestion I tried to resolve the issue. But with a limited success, changing to use 801 b & g I was able to extend the up period before crashing but not to any satisfaction.

The Shareport worked great, the LAN works great, but the constant crashing of the WI-FI has made me determine that I must return the router before I can't get a refund. There is no fix, no solution posted that has worked.  The sad thing is I had such high expectations for an alternative to Linksys. This router looked so promising but to have a product out with such poor QoS is sad.  :(

Drake, the 1.21NA from the main web page is not working well, Upload the v1.22 beta FW that is available. It's working well and stable for both Wired and Wireless connections. I wish DLink would not keep the v1.21 up on the web site. Save your configuration, update the FW, do a Factory reset, then upload the saved configuration file to avoid manual configurations. I'm running 2.4Ghz N mode only. Been pretty good. Let us know how it goes.

Drake don't listen to furrynutz and return the router for something else like a netgear wndr3700.  We've been plagued by problem fw for over a year now.  Furry wants you to disable features that you paid for in order to keep the router running.  Don't fall for this...you paid for a working router and you won't get one with any post 1.2x fw.  Take it back and get something else and stop worrying about dropped connections and lockups.

Fuzzy, I did that today, last resort, same dropping issue on the wireless. I can't even play a game on wireless without it dropping. Stays up only minutes at a time. I really am sadden by the poor quality, I am not even sure where the problem is, firmware? hardware?

Thanks Puff I will look into that netgear.

Drake, are what wireless mode are you using?  I have a buddy using G mode only on 2.4 Ghz. Mixed mode doesn't work well for gaming. Take a look at my gaming post here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10435.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10435.0)

What HW version are you running. Also how far away is the wireless adaptor from the 4500?

Tired of messing around with D-Link and all the broken promises?  Want to roll your
dgl-4500 firmware back to 1.15 right now?  The two links below have the fix. This
is not a joke.  It works.  Both sites are very reputable and people have tested it.

http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4224#15926

and

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23720820-downgrade-possible-DGL4500-12xNA115

Follow the simple instructions and tell d-link where to stuff it.

Christmas was a little late this year but better late than never!
