Title: DIR-655 with external switch
Post by: osborni on December 26, 2009, 07:35:30 AM
I just installed a DIR655 to replace an older dlink router/access point.

I have a number of wired lan devices (2 computers, Tivo, xbox, internet radio, NAS, etc.) so I need an external switch to get them all connected.

When I installed it and had the securespot web firewall thingy up and running, I eventually got it all working.  But then I decided to disable it to see how things worked without it.  Now the switch isn't recognizing the external switch and it's connected devices.  I've tried just about every combination of settings in the DIR655, but nothing seams to get it to recognize the switch connected devices.

The switch worked fine with the old router and with securespot, now it doesn't.

I dunno what I did, but it works now.  Perhaps because I left it alone for 30 minutes....  seams odd that it takes that long to figure out what's on the network though.

Any ideas?

By adding a new switch, you have technically changed the way the network routing is done within your network.  It can take some time for all devices to learn the route along the network.

You should always restard the router (and the device you have just connected) When you're connecting a new device. That way you avoid issues with lease time and broadcasts and all that stuff.

I figured that's what I needed to do.  It just took longer then I thought it would.
