Title: Problem with my DGL-4500
Post by: Stormeh on December 29, 2009, 12:11:16 PM
My household plays with 4 xboxes and computers. Up until recently I have had no problems but now my connection will drop for ~10 seconds every few minutes. I made no changes to my router settings and the issue isn't my ISP(I've checked). Any ideas what the problem could be? I've been reading about turning off DNS Relay, would this help?

What kinda of ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable? What 4500 hardware version are you using and what is the FW date code? Do you use the Gaming and GameFule options? Do any or all xboxs get disconnected? Any one xbox on the DMZ?

I only have one xbox, however my buddy in OK has 3 and he's using DSL, 4500 with DNS Relay Enabled. Mine is as well. Were both using Gaming and GameFuel options. XBL get set up in Gaming and Xboxs are setup in GameFuel. My Firewall is enabled and using Endpoint for both UDP and TCP. I think my buddy has his shut off. Can't remember.

Cable, Comcast. 1.21NA,  2009/07/09. I use the GameFuel but I don't have anything under Gaming.. Mine was fine until recently and I have no idea what could have changed it. I don't believe any are on dmz, and I have UPnP enabled.

Did you update to v1.21 recently? It's known that the released version of v1.21 is not the best. v1.21 has random reboots and restarts. When I was using it it wouldn't reboot, it would just not let anything connect to the internet. DLink knows of this and has posted some beta versions that a few of us are using. I'm pleased to say that these versions have been performing very well over wired. My buddy is using a beta to and says it's working great, however told me today that for some reason, his xbox won't let him sign into XBL if his girlfriends is already online, his has to be signed in 1st. This is recent and an oddity.
Anyways, check out the DNS relay, not sure if this would make any difference. I'm also on Cable(one) and Beta 08 of 1.21 is doing great for me. I do have gameing setup for XBL and using GameFuel for the xbox. Dynamic Fragmentation is OFF.

I just updated today to see if that would assist in fixing my problem, and it didn't. Trying the DNS Relay but I really doubt it will help.

Did you update using the released v1.21NA from the web site, or did you get the Beta 08 build? The one from there web site that's released to the public is not stable. Let us know how the DNS Relay goes. I presume it's on at the moment?

I got the beta 08 from FTP after reading up on it. I just turned it off and am now attempting to play. I'll get back as soon as possible with a result, but so far I haven't had any drops.

kewl beans. You shouldn't. I know me and my buddy haven't. Been good since using the betas. Let us know how it works out.  ::)  Check ur PCs too and make sure some web pages load correctly. There could be some issues with turning DNS relay off and PC web pages not working right. I think that's fixed though.

....  I had big issues w/ 1.20 and 1.21...

Check Logging settings.

uncheck all except Firewall& Security and Critical.

They did something that when the logs fill up it locks up the router....

Sinceturning down the logging, the router has NOT had any issues.

Worth trying.

OBTW -  I've had this router for almost 2 years.  I stuck w/ FW 1.13 for the longestbecuse 1.15 locked it up, I suscpect it was the logging issue, but since youcannot regress to 1.1x, it isa moot point.

I might try that too however since using betas and all logging is on and most other things for gaming, the 4500 has been doing very well I must say. Will be nice to get it fully stable and then just forget about all this stuff.  :-\

ya... I set my NDS to OpenDNS

Uncheck the system Advance DNS and set it to either blank (your ISP should provide) or 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220

works 4 me.

ok, hmm, well My DNS relay is ON. Advanced DNS is OFF. SPI is On and ENDPOINT for UDP/TCP. WISH is off. Hows your gaming and Gamefuel settings look? I posted my setting here the other day, 1st page about half way down:

Also what happens when you put just one xbox on the DMZ? See what happens. Also need to be sure that ur ISP or cable modem isn't the problem as well. I just spent about 3 months working with my budding OK with his system, working with various settings in the router, working with 2 different dsl modems and there setups, and come to find out that problems were with the ISP and service. 1) There system changing IPs when they shouldn't be. 2) Feedback from his dedicated DSL line back onto the main house phone line. After tech guy came out and my buddy showed him the problem and talking with level 2 (English) person. They saw the issues and resolved them. He's been good to go since then and running Beta 03 FW. Has 3 xboxes, 2 wired and one wireless.

SPI - check
udp endpoint - address restricted
TCP - port and address
enable anti-spoof
ALG- all checked

I have multiple access control rules and schedules (kids...)

all sorts of port forwarding and Dynamic DNS setup as well

Gamefuel on and top boxes all checked.

auto time update to us TS

DNS relay is checked....  took me awhile to find it  :-)

Enable multicasting

enable WISH

I also have 2 NAS's, one set as a WINS server, both have iTunes server capabitily, DDNS is pointing to one of them as an FTP server, I am working on setting up a WolfenstienET server on a lite duty machine here as well.

Just swapped all my settings to exactly what you said, testing.. I don't think it's my ISP because I went straight from my modem to my xbox and played for about 4 hours with no issue at all. The problem occurs when I'm on router.

Logging was the center of my issues.  post upgradeto FW 1.2x,  I could notget more than 2 days before it went unresponsive and needed a hard reboot.

Watch it for a while now that the logging is basically off.

Ok, was going to ask if you had done that. Check for DMZ next and one thing I have seen, sometimes the router just needs to be reset to factory and setup from scratch. Not sure why. Saw it both on mine and my buddies 4500. Even saving the config file doesn't work. I do anyways however it's not to hard or take long to set it up. You get to know that darn menu quickly. I would do a reset to factory and before you start tweeking, get on XBL and see if your seeing the same thing. You shouldn't. I basically walked by buddy thru  the same thing, reset, test then start tweeking. Have you set up any DHCP reservations? It's recommended that you do for Xboxs and gamefuel.

Reseting to factory was the first thing I tried, I still had the issue. DMZ on one of them still has the issue. DHCP Reservations? Explain please, if you don't mind.

Hmm..ok, DHCP reservations is telling the router to always give the same IP address to a connected device. Regardless of wired or wireless. If you turn one xbox, go into basic networking and look for the DHCP section. You should see a list of connected or recently connected devices. If you see the xbox listed, there is a Revoke or Reserve button next to the listing on the right side. You can assign any number as long as it doesn't conflict with something else thats reserved or the routers ip address. I try to keep an orderly fashion to the list and addresses, starting at say .2 for your first device. and working up from there. However it doesn't really matter.

Once the xbox is assigned an address, then you can set that IP address up in GameFuel so that gamefuel knows that this address has a game console and should process it as such using the additional parameters seen in gamefuel. Make sure Dynamic Fragmentation is OFF.

Is DNS relay on or off at this point?

Ok, everything has a Reservation. DNS Relay is back on, and Dynamic Defragmentation is on... Still changing that. Anything else?

Turn Dynamic Defrag and Advanced DNS to OFF. Hmm. Turn off WISH and If your not using Protected WiFi, I would turn Protected WiFi Off. Not sure what else after this. Hmm. I presume that ur cables are good cables too? Can check them if you can. Try a different one to be.

Good luck. I would do a reset or power cycle of everything just to make sure everything is clear. When you get back can you copy and paste a sample of ur logs and stats too? Be interesting to see if your dropping packets on the LAN/WAN side. You shouldn't see much but a few maybe. Wireless you'll see alot.
Also, how is the Internet setup for you? I had to enter my primary and secondary addresses into my 4500. And I presume that ur xbox is directly connected to the 4500 Lan Ports? Anything in between by chance? Just chkg.  ::)

The next thing I might try as a test is to turn off Gaming and GameFuel. See if there is any change. If ur still getting dropped, then wondering if there is a HW issue with the 4500. Having 4 xboxs on and going, wouldn't surprise me if something happened but honestly, it should work well for a long period of time. You use all 4 at the same time or sporadically at the same time?

During this testing time. Are you using the 4500 with any other devices connected and going or are you just testing with one xbox connected and everything else disconnected?
