PC SharePort Not Operating with DIR-628 Router
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:54:09 PM »

I am running a laptop that is ethernet cable connected to the Router and a wireless netbook. I have updated the router firmware (1.22NA) and obtained the latest version of the SharePort software (1.10) to run on the Windows XP machines. The SharePort software seems to function well with the laptop that is ethernet cable connected to the router. However, the wireless netbook tries to connect for a very long time and then immediately reports the status as "Available" and fails to connect. Much time has been spent trying to adjust computer settings, router settings, and in consultation with D-Link Support staff to no avail.

The key to the whole problem is the setup of a network. The Windows XP Network Setup Wizard must be executed on each of the computers in the network. After this was accomplished, then the SharePort software behaved as expected and the USB devices (printer or storage hard drives) could be shared as advertised.

I decided to leave the printer on the LAN by ethernet connecting it to the router in one of the LAN ports. In this way, it is always available to any computer on the network. The USB port on the router can then be used to share storage devices if desired.

It would be great if D-Link could advise new SharePort users to be sure to definitely setup their network first before attempting to load the software and operate the sharing facility. I believe this would be a good addition to the SharePort manual.
