DNS-323 directly to PC problem
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:30:09 AM »

I have tried connecting the 323 directly to my PC with a straight through cable using IP addresses in the same range. (192.168.2.17 & 192.168.2.20 with no luck. The only reason I was trying this is because of the router not supporting gigabit speed. The network card in my PC has two ports that support this speed so wanted to test this option out. I've been reading that a crossover cable is not necessary so can't seem to figure out the issue. I am trying to configure the correct port on the PC, by the way. Any help appreciated.

An inexpensive gigabit switch in front of the router is the solution to this.

The DNS-323's default IP address in the absence of a DHCP server on the network is 192.168.0.32.  You won't find it on the 192.168.2.x subnet.

I did change the IP of the unit to 192.168.2.17 and can find and use it no problem. Just when I try a direct connection using the same Ip I can't. I think the switch sounds like a good idea.

That's how I run here, my Verizon FiOS router is only a 100mbit device, but I have gigabit switches all around.

You mention the network card in your PC supports two ports - did you have ip addresses in the same subnet on both ports?

Set the DNS-323 back to it's default and set one of the ports on the PC to 192.168.0.1 and see if it'll work that way.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I did have the addresses in the same subnet on both ports. I was trying to set one of the ports on the PC to 192.168.0.1 but can't seem to get the 323 unit to revert back to default settings. It keeps going back to the static address I assigned it.

Hold the reset button for 15 seconds with power on.
