Easy 10/100/1000 question that I can't get a straight answer on
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:58:14 AM »

If I have one device connected at 1000Mbps and another connected at 100Mbps, does that make the transmission rates of the entire network 100Mbps, or only between the router and that 100Mbps device?  I've read different things about this concept on other sites.  I have the DGL4500 set to auto config for the speed.

Theoretically, if you have a device connected that's 1Gb and the other 100Mb, the 4500 should auto detect each connection and adjust for each different connection an maintain both connections at different connections. I have not looked in to this as I have my 4500 connected to a 24 pt GB switch and everything connected to it. One thing you can test, if you have a PC that's 1gb capable, and one that isn't, Connect both to the 4500 LAN ports. Look at the network settings for each PC. Look at the status section that will give you the connected speed. If the 4500 is set for auto, the 1Gb PC should read 1Gb, and the non Gb PC should read 100Mb. If for some reason the 1Gb is reading 100Mb, set the speed setting for that NIC from Auto to the static speed of 1Gb. Then check the connection speed again. I'm thinking the ports on the back of the 4500 should act like a switch and allow and maintain the highest speeds that PC NICs will support.
Let us know what you find out. I will try this out when I get home. Be interesting to know.

I'm pretty sure that I tried that test and it does do as you said, one shows 1Gbps and the other shows 100Mbps.  I didn't actually try a file transfer as my only other gigabit device is a PS3 and I haven't tried to do a file transfer to see if it actually gets those speeds, or is just reported that way by Windows as a max speed.

Well if you are getting the separate supported speed connections for each computer then the transfer rates will be according to the slowest connected PC. So if you did a file transfer between 1Gb and 100Mb, You'll only get 100Mb speeds. Now if the file transfer was between 2 1Gb PCs, then you'd see the 1Gb speeds. Even if the 100Mb PC is connected with the other 2 1Gb PCs on the 4500.

Yeah I figured that, but I thought I had read elsewhere that the network would only operate at the speed of the slowest connected device, but perhaps that meant the slowest connected device of a particular transfer, not of the entire network.

I would presume that the network work operate at the highest speed of each device connected and be only limited to the slowest speed of the supported device during data transfers.
