Problem configuring email notification
« on: January 09, 2010, 05:31:51 AM »

Hi, I am trying to setup the email notification system in my DNS-323 1.07 firmware and the test always fails. Is there any way to check any kind of log to find out where the problem is (authentication error, connection error, what ever...)? I just see a dialog saying test failure.

BTW, I am able to send mails via telnet connecting to the SMTP server using the configuration parameters I am using in DNS-323 so I understand all of them are correct.

Thanks in advance,

Double check your gateway IP, DNS1 and DNS2 Settings in LAN Setup.  Also recheck your ISP's smtp setting to make sure it is entered correctly. Finally make sure you are using the latest beta firmware I think there was a fix for email alerts but I can remember which FW revision is it was.  If it is not any of these it could be your ISP is blocking the port.

Thanks for the answer.
But I think Gateway and DNS servers are ok because other server names are accessed correctly like time.windows.com NTP Server. BTW, I although tried with the IP address.
And the ISP shouldn't be the problem because as I commented, I am able to access the SMTP Server via telnet from my LAN and send messages.

Is there any log file where I can check what is going on? No logging facility in DNS-323?

I am using Firmware 1.07, where can I check what's new in 1.08 Beta to verify if there was some kind of defect about e-mail alerts in 1.07?

Once again, thanks for your answers,

Answering part of my questions... I found in sub-forum Beta Code! a list of fixes and enhancements and there are many related to e-mail alerts.

But I still looking for a way to diagnose my problem. How can I access any kind of log to see error messages about what was failing? Currently I just see a error message saying Failure, Nothing else. as I don't have access to my SMTP Server logs, I would like to check some local client logs or traces.

Thanks,

BTW, I forgot to mention I am testing with Yahoo.com (smtp.mail.yahoo.com) and Terra.es (mailhost.terra.es) SMTP servers.
Anybody has successfully used any of these ones with DNS-323?

Thanks again,

Unfortunately AFAIK there is no logging function on the DNS-323 for the email alerts.  Can't offer advice on yahoo etc as I am using my ISP email for alerts.  Have you tried using a static IP in the DNS-323 LAN setup?

Also if you are trying different combination of changes make sure you set to factory default and reconfigure after each change to ensure the change is recognized.

Thanks for the info...

Yes, I am using a static LAN configuration.

Why should I reset DNS-323 factory configuration each time I touch something? I will lost the rest of configurations I already have done. Do you mean it is not getting my new changes?

Thanks again,

Yes some changes may not take effect until you do the reset.

Solved. But it requires some hacking.
Problem seems to be that Yahoo.com and Terra.es SMTP servers require "plain" authentication and it seems it is not the one used by default by the program used within DNS-323

Here it is a URL with the explanation of the hack: http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewtopic.php?id=3563

Question for people working on FW 1.08... do you think is it possible to add a new option in Web UI to select the authentication method to be used?

Thanks in advance,

I am new to this forum and just trying to relay what I learned while trying to configure the email notification to work on the DNS-323. My DNS-323 FW1.07 is connected to a DIR-655 and it wasn't until I changed the DNS1 address to 192.168.1.1, the internal IP of the DIR-655, that the email alerts started working. Before changing the DNS1 address all attempts to send a test email failed.

I don't see anything in the documentation or on the web regarding email ports used or DNS setting values when the DNS-323 is behind a router.

My Settings that work for email notifications are.

DNS1 = 192.168.1.1

EMAIL ALERTS:
Username= account@gmail.com
SMTP Server = smtp.gmail.com
Sender Email = alerts@dns-323-home.com
Receiver Email = account@gmail.com

Hope this helps

Does it make sense to point as DNS the router IP? I understand it should work pointing to the real ISP DNS, shouldn't it?

A vast majority of the SOHO routers will forward the DNS requests to the WAN DNS from the ISP.  It's very normal for the DNS Server address to point to the router, and should work just fine.  It's also easier to manage a DNS Server change if desired if all the network devices use the router, you just have to change the DNS Server address in the router to do the job.
