Dimming the LEDs
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:19:22 AM »

I know this is not a huge issue, and certainly connectivity and other features should have the highest priority, but it would certainly be nice to have an option to dim or turn off the LEDs on the front of the 825.

Obviously, one can simply physically cover the lights, but it makes one wonder why a router that touts power savings and green features would have such bright LEDs.   I am used to having light emanating from my office at night, but the first night I installed the 825 the room looked like I still had a monitor on.  I quickly covered the front of the 825 with my check book, but thought a software solution might be a bit nicer solution and save energy at the same time.

I know I am not the first to bring this up, and will most likely not be the last.  Just putting in my 2 cents as a new customer.

You probably weren't looking for a hardware solution, but a resistor wired in series will accomplish this.

Or you could simply cut the traces feeding the LED's, turning them off.  That would save the most power.

DH,

LED's burn so little power that energy use (as little as 30 milliwatts) really isn't an issue.
For dimming, just find a little scrap of auto window tint (freebie at any tint business) and apply it to the front of the router.  Grab several different filter levels or you can add as many layers as needed to get brightness down to a level you find acceptable.

Cheers ;)

Ya, the tint is probably the way I will end up going, not quite as elegant as a software solution but I can understand why this wouldn't be a very high priority.

It's funny I own a Harmon Kardon audio receiver that has almost the identical blue LED light signature, luckily it has 3 settings, bright, dim and off.
