DIR-825 Multicasting problems
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:25:50 AM »

I've had great success with my DIR-825 and my DAP-1522 up until the other day when I found out that my DIR-825 could not locally route multicast addresses. I do have a A1 with firmware 1.13NA now.

I did do some searching on these forums and found that this is defiantly a known problem. I was wanting to know if anyone had some ideas on how to over come this problem, without just getting a different router. LIke I said at the start of my post, this router has worked wonderfully for everything else, g/n general use, streaming movies to my xbox360, etc.

What I'm trying to do is use a program called Galleon, which uses mDNS, to stream data to my Tivo. My setup is this:

Tivo --- DAP-1522 -(Bridged)- DIR- 825 --- Server running Galleon

I did test that it was my router by placing the server on the DAP side and it was able to communicate with the Tivo, but I cannot leave the server on that side of the bridge permanently.

It seems that I'd have a few more options if I have the rev B hardware version of the DIR-825 with 3rd party firmware solutions. Is there a way for me to RMA mine for a rev B possibly?

Any ideas on a solution to this with the current or additional hardware would be greatly appreciated.

Enable Multicast Streams?

Or you're experiencing local DNS problems like the OP here

mDNS(Bonjor or zeroconf) wiki states that Microsofts service discovery or SSDP uses UPnP. If the media server is lan side there shouldn't be a need to enable UPnP, or is there?

I have tried all combination of upnp, enabling multicasting streams, and WISH. I know its broken on the firmware, as its been stated in this forum several times. The issue is that the multicast mac addresses seem to get swallowed up by the router.

I plan on doing a test and setting my 825 back to factory defaults to see if that will resolve the problem. I am now looking for some kind of work around for my network. I've spent around $230 total, dir-825 and dap-1522, so I'm not looking for something expensive. Brain storming is what I need now.
