DAP1522/DGL4500 Hand Puppets Required?
« on: December 16, 2009, 10:15:27 AM »

I'm trying to connect a DAP-1522 in bridge mode to my DGL-4500 router so that I can connect our new Sony TV and Panasonic Blu-Ray (which are in another room, but I'm doing the DAP-1522 initial setup right next to the router). I paged through some of the DAP-1522 threads but I have to admit that the answers weren't detailed enough for me to figure out with my level of expertise.  ???  Let me emphasize that, when it comes to networking and network devices, I'm pretty much a complete technotard. Seriously, any help I can get may require the use of hand puppets for me to understand:D

I'm using IE8 and Windows XP

On the status screen of my DGL-4500, it shows the DAP-1522 as:
192.168.0.193 DAP-1522 00:26:5a:07:0d:2d

The DGL-4500 itself shows as:
MAC Address : 00:0C:6E:38:FB:08 .
Authentication & Security :   .
IP Address : 98.27.223.213 .
Subnet Mask : 255.255.248.0 .
Default Gateway : 98.27.216.1 .
Primary DNS Server : 209.18.47.61 .
Secondary DNS Server : 209.18.47.62 .
Wireless Radio : Enabled .
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b .
Channel Width : 20MHz .
Channel : 7 .
Secondary Channel :   .
WISH : Active .
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured
MAC Address 00:1e:58:f2:f2:15
Security Mode WPA/WPA2 - Personal

When I try to access the DAP-1522 at the suggested address of 192.168.0.50 or http://DLinkAP, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". When I try 192.168.0.193 (the address for the DAP-1522 from the DGL-4500's status screen), I get "The address is not valid".

I have tried while the DAP-1522's switch is set to Auto, to Bridge, and to AP. I have tried each of those with an ethernet cord from the DGL-4500 to the DAP-1522 and I've tried each withOUT the ethernet cord.

So far, the only thing that has even kinda-sorta worked as expected is that (as I said above), after pushing the WPS buttons on both the router and bridge, the DGL-4500 status screen DOES show the DAP-1522.

So, looking at the Manual Setup instructions in the Quick Install Guide, the only thing I can see that's diferent is that it suggests that the DGL-4500's subnet (whatever the heck THAT is) be 255.255.255.0 and mine is 255.255.248.0. But, I swear, I can't figure out or find out how to change the subnet nor do I know what will happen with the other devices on the network (laptops, desktops, XBox 360) if I do.

Really folks, all I want to do is have a relatively secure home network that works, which I do through the DGL-4500 so long as I stick to the default and basic settings. Now I just want to add internet access to a couple of other pieces of electronics. Do I REALLY need to be a techie to do that? Or is just that DLink's knowledge base is hard to search/hard to understand for non-techies?

Thanks in advance for any pity, help, and patience. Oh, and don't forget to have the hand puppets ready just in case.  ;)

Anybody still needing help, check out this link:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2329231,00.asp

I read all kinds of ideas on how to get the DAP-1522 to run but it wasn't until I found this link that I could get it to sync up correctly. Another hint, don't use Firefox 3.6 to for the local setup step. Had to use IE 8 for the Wireless settings to display.

I'm not bridged to my DGL-4500 with no problems. Hope this is helpful.
