Help with changing discs

In my DNS-323 I have 2 discs size 1.5TB in RAID1. Can I take one out put it in safe place and put new second disk size 2 TB to work seperatly with this one inside?

Or for example can i put completely new 2 discs size 2 TB put it in RAID1, then take one out and return first disk of size 1.5TB to work separatly with disk sized 2 TB?

I ask this question because I need 2 more TB and I want to back it up but I dont wanna buy another NAS system... so please help: is this possible?

Swapping disks beack & forth would not be the best approach - with no backup.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
