I bought the D-Link DIR-825 because it has Wireless N technology and a whole bunch of bells and whistles.
Unfortunately I had to return it to Microcenter for one simple reason. Ports 0 and 1 were not in "stealth mode" (non-responsive). Meaning that these ports respond to outside scanning as closed (not open for communication) to potential hackers.
I used "Shields Up" provided by https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 third party port scanning to check the routers firewall effectiveness. Ports 0 and 1 responded as closed, and should not have responded at all. This is essentially notifying anyone on the internet, such as a script kiddie or novice hacker that a network exists at the IP address provided by my Internet Service Provider "Comcast".
Many Network Professionals will state that "Stealth" mode is overrated because seasoned hackers have tricks up their sleave that can determine if their is a network and a computer at the end of an IP address.
Wouldn't you prefer to avoid script kiddies and novice hackers from easily identifying the fact that your network and computer exists at the end of an ISP provided IP address (your home)?
If you are a secret squirrel government operative you will know how to combat this issue. But you are not. You are average Joe user that simply wants to check email, play games, use VOIP, and may have an occasional bug to check out the latest swim suit issue or other questionable web site.
Why make it easy for punks to easily confirm that there is a network at your address?
Most Older Routers that support Wireless A, B, and G "do not" respond as closed in the name of security called "stealth mode". Its a simple programmer code built into the router. The question becomes ... Why would D-Link or any other manufacturer change the response to "unsolicited" internet communications?
The answer is ... to condition general users into accepting the fact that they can and will be Tracked, Traced, and Databased with their internet activities.
