Scanning error - EPSON Stylus Photo RX680
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:17:35 PM »

Hello,

I recently updated the firmware on my DIR-628 (A2) to version 1.20 and installed SharePort 1.1.0 r1 (SXUPTP driver v3.3.4.0) on both my computers, and reconfigured the router from scratch. However, since doing so, I am unable to scan with my MFP through SharePort on my laptop.

I've been trying to solve this problem all day, but I've had absolutely no luck. Some input would be really appreciated at this point.

I apologise for the length of this post. I'm trying to include all relevant information.

Hard/software info:
The MFP in question is an EPSON Stylus Photo RX680. Both the laptop and the desktop have the latest driver/scan utility, v. 3.20a. I'm using a D-Link DIR-628 (hardware A2) with firmware version 1.20. I've set up DHCP reservations for both computers I personally use, to make it easier to access either of them from within the network and to forward ports. This is a home network.

Laptop is running Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit, desktop XP Home SP3. Relevant software that may cause conflicts includes Avira AntiVir Personal, COMODO Firewall, Spybot S&D Resident (no TeaTimer - desktop is an older version), Google Desktop (laptop only). Laptop has IE8, desktop IE7.

Symptoms:
I can print fine from both computers, and scan from the desktop without trouble. In addition, I can scan from the laptop if the printer is directly hooked up to it. However, with the laptop, I cannot scan via SharePort: SharePort connects, scanning is initiated (i.e., the Epson physically starts the scan), but apparently no data is received. In the Scan utility, the progress bar doesn't start filling up, the app hangs, and after half a minute, it returns the error (verbatim):

Quote from: EPSON Scan
Cannot properly communicate with the scanner.
The carriage unit may be locked depending on your scanner model.
Make sure the scanner is properly connected and ste up to scan.
Then, turn the scanner off and back on again.

I just noticed while reproducing the error that, right as the scan starts, the router spontaneously reboots (power LED turns red momentarily, four ethernet LEDs light up).

What I've tried (more or less in order):
- Reboot the laptop and router.
- Uninstall and reinstall TWAIN driver and scan utility.
- Disable all startup entries and non-Microsoft services in msconfig and reboot. (I needed some service to connect to the network and I hadn't felt like trying to figure out which I needed under Vista. However, this does already rule out Avira and COMODO as causes... as well as Google Desktop.)
- Attempt scanning under both wired and wireless connections. (I unfortunately did not think of trying this while taking the measures described in the previous point.)
- Checked COMODO's firewall logs. There aren't any blocked connections that seem like they could be related to SharePort.
- Enabled Multicast, cf. this topic - even though it was quite a different issue. (Didn't understand how it could help, though...)
- Uninstalled SharePort, deleted the D-Link keys in the registry of both HKCU\Software\ and HKLM\Software\, reinstalled with antivirus and firewall disabled. Tried again with both disabled.

Still nothing. I'm thinking of trying a clean-install of the EPSON Scan utility (i.e. uninstalling, then deleting related registry keys in HKCU\Software\ and HKLM\Software\, as well as leftover Application Data files, then reinstalling), but I'm done troubleshooting for the day...

Does anyone think this would help? Or have any other ideas of what I could try to remedy the problem? Has anyone had similar problems?

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions,
Laogeodritt

I have Windows 7 64 bit and have the CX6000 printer.

I was also having problems with getting the scanner to work.

I hate what security software does to a computer. I don't have anything, but just windows defender.

I learned that TWAIN does not work with 64 bit system, which led me to avoid trying to make it work with it.

The Epson software gave me many errors and would even crash.

Long story short, what worked for me was to let windows install the printer drivers, automatically or windows update.

To scan, I use Windows Paint or I go to the Printers and right click on the printer to choose scan.

Twain works perfectly fine with x64. I'm running 32 bits drivers+scanprogram on W7 64-bit for the Epson Perfection scanner without a problem, using the Epson scan program and Vuescan.

I am having the EXACT same problem with my Epson CX4600 MFP.  My laptop is using Vista Home Premium 64, and my desktop is using Windows 2000 Professional, the router is a DIR-628 A2 using fw 1.20.  I have no problems using the scanner on the desktop via SharePort, but trying to scan via SharePort on the laptop gets the exact same error message as you've reported, and causes the router to reboot.  I'd love to know how to fix this.

I have the same scanner issue with my DIR-825 and an HP C4280 printer/scanner:  I can print but the router reboots if I try to scan.

I'm on firmware 1.13NA with hardware Rev A1.

Add me to the list.  Win7 on two desktops, Epson 4800CX, DIR-655 w/firmware v1.32NA, Shareport 1.1.0 R1.

Everything was working fine until I upgraded to Win7 from WinXP.  Although the default Win7 printer driver seemed to work, I needed better control over the print settings (like double-sided printing) so I installed the Epson Win7 drivers.  Since then, I cannot scan through Shareport (exactly the same error as the OP) and had to connect to one of the desktops directly and stop using Shareport.

I'm thinking of getting a network printer to avoid the problem.
