825 + access point to areas with poor signal?
« on: April 03, 2009, 04:08:17 PM »

Hi,

I have just purchase DIR-825. It works great, however, in my room, which is located at the end of my house, the signal for 5Ghz is poor and 2.4Ghz the speed is at 11.0...

I would like to know if it is possible to use an additional access point in my room. I could extend a ethernet cable, from the router, all the way to the room and than plug it to an access point?
if that's possible, would the speed be affected?

Or, another option..a high gain antenna? Do you have a 5GHz hi gain antenna for 802.11n?

thanks in advance.

Try adjusting the position of the existing antennas or location of the router in the room first.  Also check to see if bandwidth in firmware is 20/40.  If there is no reason to run dual mode wireless, then only run the mode you need.  Also survey what channels are in use by other networks and force the 825 to one that is not used.

You could run a cable and use any old router, or a new switch, as an access point.  Then the speed would be wired.

You could also add a wireless access point, or perhaps turn the old router into one depending on the make and model.

Could also be the make of adapter for wireless you are using and/or the position of that in your room and/or the antenna of the adapter.

I have a similar issue - but was thinking of the following solution - can anyone confirm if this would work?

Internet =WIRED=> Gigabit Switch =WIRED=> 1st DIR-825 via Lan Port
                                                 = WIRED=> 2nd DIR-825 via Lan Port

Basically both 825's are Access points and not being used as a router.  Any idea if the 825 would support this configuration?  I would have both SSID's the same and would be able to move wirelessly between them.

I posted this on the Netgear site as well.  I think the concept is correct - just looking for hardware to support it..

Thank you!

Did you find a way to make the DIR-825 an access point?

You can use any old wireless router as an access point.  No need to spend the extra money for an 825 (and tolerate the headaches too frequently caused by the 825).

Run an ethernet cable from a LAN connection on the primary router (not the WAN connection that goes to the cable or DSL modem) to the spot in/near your room where you want to locate the wireless access point.  I would run cat 5e or cat 6 cable on the presumption that you will want gigabit ethernet now or in the future.

Then follow the general setup instructions that I gave to another poster in:
