how would you configure multiple email servers?
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:00:58 PM »

here's the issue - i am in the process of migrating to exchange 2010 from exchange 2007.  the AD in 2007 is a bit flaky so i thought i would do a clean install.  consequently, i also have sharepoint and would need to migrate it too.  I have one WAN wire coming in - I thought I would have 2 separate domains / FQDN - originaldomain.local and newdomain.local whereas the external domain name would be the same, but for testing, i could use a different external domain name and have separate mx records to test - the issue is coexistence on the same internal network.

I have 2 routers - the DIR 615 and DIR 655 - what i've initially done is run the WAN connection to a switch, with then feeds each router - in effect, two separate networks - it seems to be though, that this could be done with different configurations for one router - this issue is that i don't understand some of the features of either router - i also have 2 separate static ip addresses.

Should I put one email server in the DMZ?  When would you use this?
Should I (or could i) use a virual server configuration?  When would you use this?

Or should I just buy another router?

Depends on what you want to do with the internal mail server, the external mail server just needs the public IP passed through to it. Like the DMZ you suggested or IP Passthrough. You can even just forward the ports depending on what kind of device you have sitting between the wan and the switch. So what remains is how you want the internal mail server to function. If is just for testing then its fine behind one of the DIR routers, but it would be isolated unless your switch has some routing functions on its own. If you want both mail servers to be external then it gets a bit complicated: such as can your wan device handle both static IPs?
