DIR-655: WAN Cable Disconnected
« on: March 16, 2010, 06:32:13 AM »

Hi,
I have had the DIR-655 since August 2008 with a D-Link DSL-2320B modem. The setup has been pretty flawless with the occasional reset needed. I have the latest DIR-655 firmware (1.33NA).

Last week, I started having tons of disconnects. I contacted my provider and they ran a line check for signal quality (its an old house). They were able to ping the modem and the signal was good. So, its not the internet connection. Normally what happends is that as soon as the router is underload (e.g. - downloading or streaming video). I will lose the internet connection (wireless is maintained). If I go into the router setup, I see that the PPPoE connection is lost and not attempted to reconnect.

It shows the WAN cable disconnected in the log and "Cable Status: Disconnected" in the status. Unplugging / plugging the cable to the modem will cause this to be connected; however, it will then timeout with each PPPoE connection attempt. If I do a reset of the router, it will reconnect and be fine until I try to dowload again.

I found several other people with this problem but I havent seen an actual working solution other than "incompatable router" which obviously isnt the case here. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Chris

Perhaps it is a heat related issue--I have read that many users have found that performance improves if you apply cooling such as a fan or a heatsink.  Is your router positioned horizontally or vertically?

I have it in the vertical stand. It isnt that warm to touch.

I sent a followup email to my ISP. They said this problem is normally related to the modem being "on its way out". They said the problem is normally fixed with a new modem, which is consistent with what other forum users have done to fix the problem. I wouldnt expect that the modem is dead after a year and a few months (inconveniently just out of warranty too)! If it is, the next one wont be Dlink for sure ...

Thanks for the help.

I have the same problem almost.  The only difference is I don't need to reboot the router to reconnect.  It will eventually do this on it's own.

Hi,

If you are looking for a new cable modem, and your ISP supports it, I use the Motorola SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and am very happy with it.  Usually runs about $99 or so here is Florida, but its DOCSIS 3.0 so its future proofed as cable modems go....for now at least.
