Remote Backup not working
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:32:14 AM »

Hi,

I have two DNS-343 units all on a LAN in my office.  I'm trying to use the Remote Backup feature to copy the contents from one NAS to the other.  After I run the "Remote Backup" in the Dlink Web UI, the Web UI says "Backup Finished", but when I navigate to the DNS-343 that I'm using as a backup NAS and try to look in the folders, many of them won't open and I get a message saying the folder is "not accessible.  Access is denied."  Also, "remote backup" has not copied over all the files, because the amount space taken up on the backup NAS is significantly less than the amount of space taken up on the source NAS.

I've forwarded ports 22, 873 and 62057 on my router to the IP address of my SOURCE DNS-343.  I'm using a D-link router DIR-655 and a D-Link switch DGS-1016D.  I'm running Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi unthinkableimages,

I just replied to your other post...  You may also want to consider fun_plug'ing both your devices so that you can use a newer version of rsync instead of the rsync software that comes with the DNS.

For example, if you use ffp (http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.5/), it comes with version rsync 3.0.7, which is the latest version (see http://rsync.samba.org/), whereas the DNS firmware comes with a much older version of rsync.

I have two DNS-343's and a DNS-323 setup with rsync (via ffp) working extremely well.  I have a cron job that runs every night that does all my backup needs.  Very elegant -- it hasn't failed once since I finally got the config setup correctly about 2 months ago.

Thanks for the info thebeck.  It's a big help.  Setting up a VPN tunnel does sound like a good way to go for my needs.  Also, I'll look into installing fun_plug.  I'd been trying to avoid it because of warranty issues, but I might just go for it.

I'm surprised that Dlink is using such an old version of rysnc since it is free.

Thanks again,
Michael
