PNP-X 1.02 Driver Vista x64 & Windows 7 x64
« on: January 23, 2009, 08:39:29 PM »

Hey guys-- I'm using the PNP-X 1.02 driver on Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64.  As long as I'm on my (W)LAN where the DNS-323 is present, I get the same issue on both OS:

Windows will no longer go to sleep, after about 4-5 minutes, my laptop will BSOD
Windows will no longer shutdown, after about 5-10 minutes it will BSOD
New application installs which use Windows Installer take several times longer to complete
When opening any device (via devmgmt.msc), clicking on the details pane locks the msc & must be force quit
When installing/uninstalling any hardware device, the process never completes
Microsoft Volume Shadow Service fails to operate properly, breaks System Restore and "Previous Verisons"

When looking at the error logs & reports windows sends to Microsoft, the BSOD errors all have the same fault "INVALID_POWER_STATE".  Windows Error logs (on Windows Seven) have Event ID 41 / Critical / User: SYSTEM / Task Category 63 / Keywords 2 / "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Another Bugcheck (eventid 1001) "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000004, 0x0000000000000258, 0xfffffa8003c26b60, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 012209-21684-01."

When I turn off the WLAN (otherwise completely disconnected from my own network) I am able to remove the pnp-x driver and shutdown/suspend/resume amongst other things work properly again.  This explains why I was able to take my laptop off premises to friends or Starbucks and everything seemed normal... until I got home.

Is anyone else experiencing this trouble?

And I'm using Windows 7 x64 - and not Using the PNP-X 1.02 at all and the DNS-323 is working fine

I can map drives (and they stay mapped after a reboot)
and I can also browse the DNS through "Computer" under Network...

No problem what so ever...

P.S.
I add a lot of blue BSOD at first in Windows 7. All of them was cause by my anti-virus / firewall
and having mapped drives.
Kaspersky Windows 7 beta - AVG 8 - ESET v3.x  --> all of those gave me BSOD when a drive was mapped to the DNS-323

The only one that seam to work fine is ESET Smart Security v4 Beta (search on support of www.ESET.com for "Smart security 4")

Kapersky & Norton360 Beta caused tons of BSODs in my experience.  It has felt weird being free of security products on Windows 7 - but I also have to admit, I've not yet had the experience of being infected on 7 either.  Not even with spyware.

However, the moment I put the PNP-X 64 driver on and try to suspend... BSOD every time.  INVALID_POWER_STATE. :-D

but I have a question ttmcmurry....

What does the PNP-X drivers do ??

My Windows 7 detect the DNS-323 fine, and I have access to the shared folders fine.....

Once installed, if you go to "My Network Places" or "Network" (depending on what version of Windows) the driver gives the 323 a nice looking icon, the ability to invoke the 323's setup webpage by double-clicking, and some additional information on the 323.

The driver also makes Windows list the 323 under Device Manager -> Disk Drives.   Consequently, the disk drive entry is what I believe is giving me so much trouble with BSODs when going into Standby.

The PNP-X driver is totally unessential for proper operation of the 323 on any Windows computer, though it does add some convenience features.

Well I'm using windows 7 x64 at the moment.... and I don't have the PNP-X installed

and under Network I see 1 different Icons for the DNS-323
on one of them (looks like a tower) if I dbl click on it It gets me to the WebConfiguration of the DNS-323
if I right click on it, I see a "Install" option on the pop-up menu
and theres also a properties that give me some info on the DNS
Strangely enough (maybe because there is no drivers) it list the Serial Number has 00000001
but the rest seams to be accurate.

the other Icon look like a Computer (same has the other computer that I have on my network)
and if I double click on that one, I see the shared folder of the DNS-323

So the only thing I'm missing is the disk drive entries under device manger

I also can't figure out ouit to install the 1.02 driver.

I am running Vista 64, and have installed the latest firmware (as of 6/10/2009).

When I open up Network, I see one object for the DNS-323 that looks like a computer.

When I select that object I see two disk drives plus the following:
lp       (looks like a small version of Printers)
Printers   (even though I have none connected)
    web_page

I see nothing under Device Manager for the device so I can't figure out how to install
the 1.02 driver.

One strange thing, the Volume_1 drive activity light seems to run continually and I can hear the
drive working all the time.   The drive has thousands of files and has about 400G (out of 500G) filled.

But even while it is doing all this unknow activity, I can access the data that is on it.

Volume_2 is only about 25% (again of 500G) full, and it's activity light goes out shortly after the unit is turned on.

Same problem with Windows 7 pro 64 bit after installing the PNP-X driver:

- When installing/uninstalling any hardware device, the process never completes.

I want the DNS 323 Icon in my Network Map and Network view.

Is there a fix???

Thanks.

I've never loaded any of these drivers on any version of Windows I run.  When I look at the network map with Windows 7 64-bit, I see this.

Tell me what the driver is going to do that I don't already have?

You are correct. I can see the DNS 323 device in the network map. I was wrong.

But you have an "install" option (right click on DNS in the network browser). You can install the pnp-x driver and after that the DNS decive is visible in the Device Manager. I don't know if it is usefull but after installing also the icon in the network browser is the right one. Without driver it is a default white icon.

So I do not need the driver, you are right but it's nicer with a driver installed.

Thanks.

Since the driver offers no functional benefit, I'm not sure how it's "nicer", but whatever floats your boat. :)

FWIW, when I right click on the DNS-323 in the Network Window, I have no Install option, never thought about it.  It does have a generic icon there, never thought about that either. :)
