Hi there!

Its been bothering me for a while now. Since i've switched to this router, I am able to see the computers on the network but I cannot connect from one computer to the other. Things such as homegroups do not work, and I am unable to connect to the shared folders. I currently have the newest firmware since I have updated a few weeks ago. Could it be a certain setting within the router?

Kind of doubt is the router. Are you sure all the PCs on the network are on the same named workgroup, i.e. WORKGROUP or MSHOME or something that you've given a name to? I presume you have setup shares or shared out folders for each pc? Any other 3rd party firewalls installed and enabled and if so, do you have the Firewalls set up to allow the connections?

I dont use any 3rd part firewalls and everything seemed to be working fine with my prior router. Also since i'm using windows 7 I did not have to join a workgroup as in the prior windows.

 The homegroups also detects the computers and shows some of the shared files, but it does not let me go into them. I get the "The remote computer isn’t responding to connections on port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn’t find any problems with the firewall on your computer. " error when i do.

Also I get this report, not sure if it is of any help.

Windows 7 does have different security policies as I have seen this issue at work when connecting to other computers on the same group or different. There was one fix was to map to the drive and sign in using the same log in information as whats on the PC your trying to connect too. Are you trying to connect with Windows 7 to a different OS/PC or are you sharing out something on the Windows 7 PC?

Basically its a windows 7 pc connecting to a windows 7 pc via homegroups. The pcs do show up on the list for each other but when one attempts to connect to the other, an error comes up saying it was unable to connect and the reason could not be determined. the only reason I was thinking that it is a router issue is because it was working fine with the past router.

Also if I connect the pcs directly to each other through an ethernet cable they can connect no prob.

Hmm well I only have my one windows 7 that I'm using now and have a dedicated Server 2003 that is a file server that has my shared out folders, when I go to connect I did get the log in screen and I used the log in name and PW of the Server 2003 to connect. I use Static IPs, FW(SPI) and Gamefuel on the 4500. No connection to share issues see as of yet. Have you tried to manually put in the name of the pc and the share in Explorer? i.e. \\hostpcname\sharedfoldername and connect like that?

Ya just tried it and got the "file not found" thing on the browser. I appreciate the help though

I also just tried a pretty old router I had laying around and they did connect. so now i'm almost positive its the d-link router.

Hmmm...do you have any configuration settings on the router or you just using default settings?

hmm not much. haven't really messed with it much.

Well either way, should work I presume out of the box. I've set mine up with GameFuel and Static IPs. Also set the Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses in Basic/Internet/Manual. Not sure if that would help. Other than this, not sure what would prevent connecting to other PCs on the same network on the router. How about DNS relay? Is that on or off? Its on for me here. You might run thru the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky and see if anything in there could help out. Set you system up for Static IPs, You don't have to use the Gamefuel settings. However try out some of the other things in there.
