[Resolved] One computer won't find the printer
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:44:51 PM »

We have an assortment of Linux and Windows computers accessing the DND-323.

One is using XP and won't find the attached printer, which is strange because 1) it can access the unit's menu, therefore I don't think the firewall is a problem and 2) we have another XP computer which can find it easily automatically.

What gives and how do I fix this?

First - the problem WILL lie with the computer that cannot see the printer, and second, the problem MAY and is quite likely to be the firewall - you may feel that being able to access the DNS-323's "menu" indicates that this is not so, but I assure you that this is not the case - the web admin pages are accessed using a different protocol (http) which in most cases will not be blocked by the firewall (if it was, you'd be unable to browse the web, which is the single most used application in the world today, and no firewall blocks this as a default setting).

Check your network stack - make certain that file & print sharing is enabled, check your firewall settings - make sure that the "local" network is "trusted".

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

An easy way to determine if it's the firewall is to simply disable the firewall as a test.  If you can access the printer, that's where the problem lies.  If you still can't access the printer, you'll have to keep looking.

OK, it's the firewall.

"Local Network Connections" was enabled, but File and Printer Sharing was not, so that was changed.

XP also seems to think that it didn't have the printer's driver, even though the computer prints using a USB cable, so I reinstalled the printer driver.

Everything is working as expected now. Thanks for your help!

Great, glad to see it was an easy one to beat into submission. :)
